NOTE
The 3.7L, 4.7L, 5.7L and 8.0L engines do not use a distributor.

Installation

Timing Disturbed
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Set the engine at Top Dead Center (TDC) of the No. 1 cylinder compression stroke.
  4.
  5. Install the distributor, clamp and bolt.
  6.
  7. Rotate the distributor so that the rotor aligns with the No. 1 cylinder mark on the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor. Tighten the clamp bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).

Timing Not Disturbed
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
The rotor will rotate clockwise as the gears engage.

  2.
  3. Position the rotor slightly counterclockwise of the matchmark made during removal.
  4.
  5. Install the distributor.
  6.
  7. Align the distributor housing and intake manifold matchmarks and check that the distributor housing matchmark and rotor are also aligned.
  8.
  9. Install or connect the following:

Distributor housing clamp and bolt. Tighten the bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).

    CMP sensor connector

WARNING
Base ignition timing is not adjustable on any engine. Distributors do not have built in centrifugal or vacuum assisted advance. Base ignition timing and timing advance are controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Because a conventional timing light can not be used to adjust distributor position after installation, note position of distributor before removal.

  1. Remove the engine cover.
  2.
  3. Remove air cleaner assembly.
  4.
  5. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  6.
  7. Remove distributor cap from distributor (two screws). Mark the position of distributor housing in relationship to engine or dash panel. This is done to aid in installation.
  8.
  9. Before distributor is removed, the number one cylinder must be brought to the Top Dead Center (TDC) firing position, as follows:
    1. Attach a socket to the Crankshaft Vibration Damper mounting bolt.
    2.
    3. Slowly rotate engine clockwise, as viewed from front, until indicating mark on crankshaft vibration damper is aligned to 0 degree (TDC) mark on timing chain cover.

    4.
    5. The distributor rotor should now be aligned to the CYL. NO. 1 alignment mark (stamped) into the camshaft position sensor. If not, rotate the crankshaft through another complete 360 degree turn. Note the position of the number one cylinder spark plug cable (on the cap) in relation to rotor. Rotor should now be aligned to this position.

  17. Remove the distributor from vehicle.
    WARNING
Do not crank engine with distributor removed. Distributor/crankshaft relationship will be lost.
