Removal & Installation

The ignition coil is an epoxy filled type. If the coil is replaced, it must be replaced with the same type. The coil is mounted to a bracket that is bolted to the front of the right engine cylinder head. This bracket is mounted on top of the automatic belt tensioner bracket using common bolts.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the primary wiring from the ignition coil.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the secondary spark plug cable from the ignition coil.
    WARNING
Do not remove the coil mounting bracket-to-cylinder head mounting bolts. The coil mounting bracket is under accessory drive belt tension. If this bracket is to be removed for any reason, all belt tension must first be relieved. Refer to the belt section of Engine Mechanical.

  6.
  7. Remove ignition coil from coil mounting bracket (two bolts).

To install:

  1. Install the ignition coil to coil bracket. If nuts and bolts are used to secure coil to coil bracket, tighten to 100 inch lbs (11 Nm. If the coil mounting bracket has been tapped for coil mounting bolts, tighten the bolts to 50 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  2.
  3. Connect all wiring to ignition coil.

3.9L, 5.2L & 5.9L Engines

The ignition coil is an epoxy filled type. If the coil is replaced, it must be replaced with the same type.

On 3.9L or 5.2L and 5.9L LDC gasoline engines, the coil is mounted to a bracket that is bolted to the front of the right engine cylinder head. This bracket is mounted on top of the automatic belt tensioner bracket using common bolts.

On the 5.9L DC gasoline engine, the coil is mounted to a bracket that is bolted to the air injection pump (AIR pump) mounting bracket.

  1. Disconnect the primary wiring from the ignition coil.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the secondary spark plug cable from the ignition coil.
    CAUTION
do not remove the coil mounting bracket-to-cylinder head mounting bolts. The coil mounting bracket is under accessory drive belt tension. If this bracket is to be removed for any reason, all belt tension must first be relieved. Refer to the belt section of the Engine Mechanical Section.

Testing

Useful tests can be carried out with an ohmmeter.

  1. Disconnect the primary wires and the lead to the distributor.
  2.
  3. Check resistance across the primary wire connectors. It should be about 1 ohm.
  4.
  5. Check resistance between the one of the primary wire connectors and the high tension lead. It should be about 12-15K ohms.
  6.
  7. If resistance is not within spec, replace the coil.
