Rocker Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    The sockets may fall out of the rocker arms as the rocker arms are lifted from the cylinder head. Do not drop the sockets into the engine.


    NOTE
    Keep all valvetrain components in order for assembly.



    Negative battery cables
     
    Valve cover
     



    Rocker arms and pedestal assemblies

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Rocker arm and pedestal assemblies. Tighten the bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
     
    Valve cover. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
     
    Negative battery cables
     

  2.  

3.7L And 4.7L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Valve covers
     

  4.  
  5. Rotate the crankshaft so that the piston of the cylinder to be serviced is at Top Dead Center (TDC) and both valves are closed.
  6.  
  7. Use special tool 8516 to depress the valve and remove the rocker arm.
  8.  
  9. Repeat for each rocker arm to be serviced.
    NOTE
    Keep valvetrain components in order for reassembly.

To install:

  1. Rotate the crankshaft so that the piston of the cylinder to be serviced is at BDC.
  2.  
  3. Compress the valve spring and install each rocker arm in its original position.
  4.  
  5. Repeat for each rocker arm to be installed.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Cylinder head cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  

3.9L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Keep all valvetrain components in order for assembly.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Valve covers
     
    Rocker arms
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Rotate the crankshaft so that the V6 mark on the crankshaft damper aligns with the timing mark on the front cover. The V6 mark is located 147 degrees AFTER Top Dead Center (TDC).
  2.  
  3. Install the rocker arms in their original positions and tighten the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
    CAUTION
    Do not rotate the crankshaft during or immediately after rocker arm installation. Wait 5 minutes for the hydraulic lash adjusters to bleed down.

  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Valve covers
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Keep all valvetrain components in order for assembly.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine cover
     
    Valve covers
     
    Rocker arms
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Rotate the crankshaft so that the V6 mark on the crankshaft damper aligns with the timing mark on the front cover. The V6 mark is located 147 degrees AFTER Top Dead Center (TDC).

  3. Install the rocker arms in their original positions and tighten the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Valve covers
     
    Engine cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  

5.2L & 5.9L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Keep valvetrain components in order for reassembly.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Valve covers
     
    Rocker arms
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Rotate the crankshaft so that the V8 mark on the crankshaft damper aligns with the timing mark on the front cover. The V8 mark is located 147 degrees AFTER Top Dead Center (TDC).

  3. Install the rocker arms in their original positions and tighten the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).

    Keep valvetrain components in order for reassembly.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Valve covers
     
    Rocker arms

To install:


CAUTION
When installing the rocker arms, ensure that the piston is not at Top Dead Center. Tighten the rocker arm bolts slowly. Do not rotate the crankshaft during or immediately after rocker arm installation. Wait 5 minutes for the hydraulic lash adjusters to bleed down.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Rocker arms in their original positions. Tighten the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
     
    Valve covers
     
    Negative battery cable
