Bushing Replacement



The control arm bushings are serviced with the control arm as an assembly.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Brake hose brackets
     
    Upper ball joint
     
    Pivot mounting nuts
     
    Upper control arm
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Upper control arm. Tighten the pivot nuts to 155 ft. lbs. (210 Nm).
     
    Upper ball joint. Tighten the nut to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
     
    Brake hose brackets
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
  4.  

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel and tire assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the disc brake caliper and rotor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake hose bracket connected to the upper control arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the wheel speed sensor, if equipped.
  10.  
  11. Support lower suspension arm.
  12.  
  13. Remove cotter pin and nut from upper ball joint.
  14.  
  15. Position Ball Joint Remover C-3564-A and rotate threaded portion of tool to apply force to the lower ball joint.
  16.  
  17. Strike steering knuckle sharply with a hammer to loosen ball joint from knuckle. Do not force ball joint out from knuckle with the tool.
  18.  
  19. Separate upper ball joint from steering knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Remove suspension arm pivot bar nuts and remove suspension arm.

To install:

  1. Position suspension arm pivot bar on frame and tighten bolts to 200 ft. lbs. (298 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Position steering knuckle on upper ball joint tighten the upper ball joint nut to 135 ft. lbs. (183 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install a new cotter pin.
  6.  
  7. Install the wheel speed sensor.
  8.  
  9. Install the brake hose bracket at the upper control arm.
  10.  
  11. Install disc brake caliper.
  12.  
  13. Remove support from the lower suspension arm.
  14.  
  15. Install wheel and tire assembly and lower the vehicle..
  16.  
  17. Check the front end alignment.
  18.  

Coil Spring Suspension
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Upper ball joint
     
    Pivot mounting nuts
     
    Upper control arm
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Upper control arm. Tighten the pivot nuts to 97 ft. lbs. (132 Nm) for LD; 125 ft. lbs. (170 Nm) HD 2wd
     
    Upper ball joint. Tighten the nut to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). On 1500 series, turn the nut an additional 90 degrees.
     
    Front wheel

Link/Coil Suspension-Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Nut and bolt at the axle bracket
     
    Nut and bolt at the frame rail
     
    Upper control arm
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Position the control arm and install all fasteners finger-tight.
  2.  
  3. Install the front wheel. And lower the vehicle to load the suspension. Tighten all fasteners to 120 ft. lbs. (163 Nm).
  4.  

Link/Coil Suspension-Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Exhaust system at the manifolds
     
    Exhaust mounts at the muffler
     

  6.  
  7. Support the transmission
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission crossmember
     
    Nut and bolt at the axle bracket
     
    Nut and bolt at the frame rail
     
    Upper control arm
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Position the control arm and install all fasteners finger-tight.
  2.  
  3. Install the exhaust system and crossmember.
  4.  
  5. Install the front wheel. And lower the vehicle to load the suspension. Tighten all fasteners to 120 ft. lbs. (163 Nm).
  6.
