Lower Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



The control arm bushings are serviced with the control arm as an assembly.

  1. Remove lower control arm.
  2.  
  3. Use an arbor press and an appropriate size sleeve (driver) to force out old bushing.
  4.  

To install:

  1. Use an arbor press and an appropriate size sleeve (driver) to install the new bushing. Ensure bushing is completely seated.
  2.  
  3. Install lower control arm.
  4.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm with a floor jack.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Lower ball joint
     
    Coil spring
     
    Crossmember nuts
     
    Lower control arm
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm. Tighten the crossmember nuts to 145 ft. lbs. (196 Nm).
     
    Coil spring
     
    Lower ball joint. Tighten the nut to 135 ft. lbs. (183 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the Coil Spring, as outlined in this section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower suspension arm pivot bolt from the crossmember.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower suspension arm from the vehicle.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Loosely attach suspension arm to lower crossmember.
  2.  
  3. Install the Coil Spring, as outlined in this section.
  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle and tighten lower suspension arm pivot bolt to 175 ft. lbs. (237 Nm)
  6.  

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the disc brake caliper and the rotor from steering knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the tension strut from the lower suspension arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the shock absorber.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cotter pin and lower ball joint nut at the steering knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Install Ball Joint Remover C-3564-A on the lower ball joint. Turn the threaded portion of the tool and lock securely against the lower joint.
  14.  
  15. Expand the tool enough to place force on the lower ball joint. Strike the steering knuckle sharply with a hammer to loosen the joint. Do not attempt to force the joint out of the steering knuckle with the loosening tool.
  16.  
  17. Remove the Coil Spring. Refer to the procedure in this section for details.
  18.  
  19. Pivot the lower suspension arm downward.
  20.  
  21. Remove coil spring and isolator pad from the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Remove the lower suspension arm pivot bolt from the crossmember.
  24.  
  25. Remove the lower suspension arm from the vehicle.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Loosely attach suspension arm to lower crossmember.
  2.  
  3. Install spring. Refer to the procedure in this section for details.
  4.  
  5. Position the steering knuckle on the lower ball joint.
  6.  
  7. Install the retaining nut on the lower ball joint and tighten to:
    1. LD 11/16 bolt: 135 ft. lbs. (183 Nm).
    2.  
    3. HD 3/4 bolt: 175 ft. lbs. (237 Nm).
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Install new cotter pins.
  10.  
  11. Install the tension strut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the spring compressor tool.
  14.  
  15. Install the shock absorber.
  16.  
  17. Install the disc brake caliper.
  18.  
  19. Install wheel and tire assembly and lower the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle and tighten lower suspension arm pivot bolt to 175 ft. lbs. (237 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Check the front wheel alignment.
  24.  

Coil Spring Suspension
2wd
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm with a floor jack.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Lower ball joint
     
    Coil spring
     
    Crossmember nuts
     
    Lower control arm
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm. Tighten the crossmember nuts to 145 ft. lbs. (196 Nm).
     
    Coil spring
     
    Lower ball joint. Tighten the nut to 135 ft. lbs. (183 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  

4wd
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Upper ball joint from the knuckle
     
    Halfshaft
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Shock absorber lower bolt
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Lower ball joint from the knuckle
     
    Lower control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    The ball stud taper must be clean and dry before installation.



    Lower control arm. Tighten bolts finger-tight.
     
    Torsion bar
     



    Lower ball joint. Tighten the nut to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm) (on 1500 series, plus 90 degrees).
     
    Shock absorber lower bolt. Torque it to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
     
    Halfshaft
     
    Upper ball joint. Tighten the nut to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) (on 1500 series, plus 90 degrees).
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     

  2.  
  3. Tighten the pivot bolts to 150 ft. lbs. (204 Nm).

    Front wheel
     

  4.  

Coil/Link Suspension
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Paint or scribe matchmarks on the cam adjusters and suspension arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower arm nut, cam and cam bolt
     
    Nut and bolt from the frame rail
     
    Lower arm
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm. Tighten bolts finger-tight. Align the reference marks.
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the truck to load the suspension
  4.  
  5. Tighten the nuts to 160 ft. lbs. (217 Nm).
  6.
