5PCV valve: inspect every 30,000 miles

The manufacturer provides maintenance schedules for each vehicle family based on "normal" operating conditions and schedules based on "severe service" conditions.

"Severe service" is considered to apply if the vehicle is operated under one or more of the following conditions:

Frequent, short-trip driving of less than 5 miles (8 km).

Frequent driving in dusty conditions.

Trailer towing or heavy load hauling.

Frequent, long periods of engine idling.

Sustained, high-speed operation.

Desert operation.

Frequent starting or stopping.

Cold-climate operation.

Off-road driving.

Commercial service.

Snow plow operation.

More than half of the vehicle operation occurs in heavy city traffic during hot weather (above 90ºF/32ºC).

Maintenance items for vehicles in "severe service" should be performed approximately twice as often as those in normal use.

In addition to the items listed in the charts, the following procedures should be carried out:

At each stop for fuel:

Check engine oil level.

Check windshield washer solvent.

Clean windshield and wiper blades.

After completion of off-road (4WD) use, the underside of the vehicle should be thoroughly inspected. Examine threaded fasteners for looseness.

Once a month:

Check tire pressure and look for unusual wear or damage.

Inspect battery and clean and tighten terminals as required.

Check fluid levels of coolant reservoir, brake master cylinder, power steering, and transmission.

Check lights and other electrical devices for proper operation.

At each oil change:

Inspect exhaust system.

Inspect brake hoses.

Adjust rear brakes.

Rotate the tires. If using "severe service" maintenance schedule, do this at every other oil change.

Check engine coolant level, hoses, clamps.

Lubricate steering linkage.

Lubricate the driveshaft universal joints and slip spline, if applicable.

Fig. UNDERHOOD MAINTENANCE COMPONENT LOCATIONS

Proper maintenance and tune-up is the key to long and trouble-free vehicle life, and the work can yield its own rewards. Studies have shown that a properly tuned and maintained vehicle can achieve better gas mileage than an out-of-tune vehicle. As a conscientious owner and driver, set aside a Saturday morning, say once a month, to check or replace items that could cause major problems later.

Keep your own personal log to jot down which services you performed, how much the parts cost you, the date, and the exact odometer reading at the time. Keep all receipts for such items as engine oil and filters, so that they may be referred to in case of related problems or to determine operating expenses. As a do-it-yourselfer, these receipts are the only proof you have that the required maintenance was performed. In the event of a warranty problem, these receipts will be invaluable.

The literature provided with your vehicle when it was originally delivered includes the factory recommended maintenance schedule. If you no longer have this literature, replacement copies are usually available from the dealer. A maintenance schedule is provided later in this section, in case you Do NOT have the factory literature.
