Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels
     
    Skid plate, if equipped
     
    Outer tie rod ends
     
    Steering shaft coupler. Discard the pinch bolt.
     
    Power steering hoses
     
    Steering gear
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering gear. Tighten the bolts to 235 ft. lbs. (319 Nm).
     
    Power steering hoses. Tighten the pressure line fitting to 23 ft. lbs. (32 Nm); return line to 52 ft. lbs. (71 Nm)
     
    Steering shaft coupler. Tighten the bolt to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
     
    Outer tie rod ends. Tighten the nuts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
     
    Front wheels
     

  2.  

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. 4WD: remove the splash shield.
  4.  
  5. Remove the nuts from the tie rod ends.
  6.  
  7. Separate the tie rod ends from the knuckles with a suitable puller.
  8.  
  9. Remove the power steering lines from the gear.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower coupler bolt and slide the coupler off the gear.
  12.  
  13. Remove the mounting bolts from the gear to front crossmember and remove the gear.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Reverse the removal procedure. Note the torque specifications for the fastening hardware.
  2.  
  3. Fill the system with fluid and perform the power steering pump initial operation procedure.
  4.  
  5. Realign the front end.
  6.

Boot Seal



  1. Remove the steering gear.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the jam nut and remove the tie rod end and jam nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the outer clamp from the rubber boot.
  6.  
  7. Remove the boot inner clamp.
  8.  
  9. On 2WD, mark the breather tube location on steering gear before removing the rubber boot.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the boot outer groove (tie rod) with silicone type lubricant. Ensure that the boot is not twisted.
  2.  
  3. On 2WD, align the breather tube with the reference mark on the steering gear.
  4.  
  5. Position and align the new boot over the housing.
  6.  
  7. Install the inner clamp on the rubber boot.
  8.  
  9. Install the snorkel clamp on 2WD vehicles.
  10.  
  11. Install the outer clamp on the inner tie rod.
  12.  
  13. Install the jam nut and the tie rod end.
  14.  
  15. Install the steering gear.
  16.
