Removal & Installation



Front Driveshaft
Heavy Duty
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. With vehicle in neutral, position vehicle on hoist.
  4.  
  5. Remove exhaust crossover pipe.
  6.  
  7. Mark a line across axle/transfer case companion flange and propeller shaft flange yokes for installation reference.
  8.  
  9. Remove axle/transfer case companion flange bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the propeller shaft.

To install:

  1. Install propeller shaft with all reference marks aligned.
  2.  
  3. Install transfer case companion flange (2) bolts and tighten to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install new axle companion flange (3) bolts and tighten to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
    NOTE
    Companion flange bolts incorporate a Loctite® patch, new bolts should be used. If bolts are not available, clean the bolts and apply Loctite® 242 to the threads.

  6.  
  7. Install skid plate, if equipped.
  8.  

Light Duty
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. With vehicle in neutral, position vehicle on hoist.
  4.  
  5. Remove exhaust crossover pipe.
  6.  
  7. Mark a line across the axle companion flange, propeller shaft, flange yoke and transfer case for installation reference.
  8.  
  9. Remove axle/transfer case companion flange bolts. Remove dust boot clamp from the C/V joint end of the shaft if equipped.
  10.  
  11. Remove the propeller shaft.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install propeller shaft with all reference marks aligned.
  2.  
  3. Install with dust boot clamp at transfer case end.
  4.  
  5. Install new axle companion flange bolts and tighten to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
    NOTE
    Companion flange bolts incorporate a Loctite® patch, new bolts should be used. If bolts are not available, clean bolts and apply Loctite® 242 to the threads.

  6.  
  7. Install skid plate, if equipped.
  8.  

Rear Driveshaft
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. With vehicle in neutral, position vehicle on hoist.
  4.  
  5. Mark propeller shaft pinion flange and propeller shaft flange with installation reference marks.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with manual transmission, mark manual transmission flange and propeller shaft flange for installation reference.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with a center bearing mark an outline of the center bearing on the center bearing bracket for installation reference. Then support propeller shaft and remove mounting bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove pinion flange bolts from propeller shaft.
  12.  
  13. Slide propeller shaft back off automatic transmission/transfer case output shaft, then mark propeller shaft and transmission/transfer case output shaft for installation reference.
  14.  
  15. If equipped with manual transmission remove flange bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove propeller shaft the from vehicle.
    WARNING
    Failure to follow these instructions may result in a driveline vibration.

  18.  

To install:

  1. Slide slip yoke onto automatic transmission/transfer case output shaft with reference marks aligned.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with manual transmission, align transmission flange and propeller shaft reference marks. Install new flange bolts and tighten to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm)
  4.  
  5. If two piece propeller shaft, align center bearing with reference marks on center bearing bracket and tighten bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Align reference marks on propeller shaft and pinion flange. Install new companion flange bolts and tighten to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
    WARNING
    Failure to follow these instructions may result in a driveline vibration.
