Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



3.7L, 4.7L & 5.7L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission
     
    Flexplate
     

  4.  
  5. Thread Oil Seal Remover 8506 into the rear main seal as far as possible and remove the rear main seal.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Seal Guide 8349-2 onto the crankshaft
     
    Rear main seal on the seal guide
     
    Rear main seal, using the Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installer 8349 and Driver Handle C-4171; tap it into place until the installer is flush with the cylinder block
     
    Flexplate. Torque the bolts in the sequence shown to 45 ft. lbs. (60 Nm) on auto trans., or 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm) for man. trans.
     
    Transmission

  3. Start the engine, check for leaks and repair if necessary.

5.9L & 6.7L Diesel Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cables
     
    Transmission
     
    Clutch and pressure plate, if equipped
     
    Flywheel
     
    Rear main seal
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Rear main seal. Use the alignment tool supplied with the seal kit.
     
    Flywheel. Tighten the bolts to 101 ft. lbs. (137 Nm).
     
    Clutch and pressure plate, if equipped
     
    Transmission
     
    Negative battery cables
     

  2.  
  3. Start the engine and check for leaks.
