Removal & Installation



3.7L & 4.7L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Valve covers
     

  4.  
  5. Rotate the crankshaft so that the piston of the cylinder to be serviced is at Top Dead Center (TDC) and both valves are closed.
  6.  
  7. Use special tool 8516 to depress the valve and remove the rocker arm.
  8.  
  9. Repeat for each rocker arm to be serviced.
    NOTE
    Keep valve train components in order for reassembly.

To install:

  1. Rotate the crankshaft so that the piston of the cylinder to be serviced is at BDC.
  2.  
  3. Compress the valve spring and install each rocker arm in its original position.
  4.  
  5. Repeat for each rocker arm to be installed.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Cylinder head cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  

5.7L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Install push rod retainer (1) 9070.

  5. Loosen the rocker shafts using the sequence provided.
    WARNING
    The rocker shaft assemblies are not interchangeable between intake and exhaust. The intake rocker arms are marked with an (I).

  7. Remove the rocker shafts. Note location for reassembly.
    WARNING
    The longer push rods are for the exhaust side, and the shorter push rods are for intake side.

  9. Remove the push rods. Note push rod location for reassembly.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the push rods in the same order as removed.
  2.  
  3. Install the push rod retainer (1) 9070.
    WARNING
    Ensure that retainers and rocker arms are not overlapped when tightening bolts or engine damage could result.


    WARNING
    Verify that push rod is installed into rocker arm and tappet correctly while installing rocker shaft assembly or engine damage could result. Recheck after rocker shaft has been tightened to specification.

  5. Install rocker shaft assemblies in the same order as removed.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the rocker shaft bolts to 195 inch. lbs. (22 Nm). Use loosening procedure for tightening sequence.
    WARNING
    DO NOT rotate or crank the engine during or immediately after rocker arm installation. Allow the hydraulic roller tappets adequate time to bleed down (about 5 minutes).

  9. Remove push rod retainer (1) 9070.
  10.  
  11. Install cylinder head cover.
  12.  

5.9L & 6.7L Diesel Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    The sockets may fall out of the rocker arms as the rocker arms are lifted from the cylinder head. Do not drop the sockets into the engine.


    NOTE
    Keep all valvetrain components in order for assembly.



    Negative battery cables
     
    Valve cover

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Rocker arm and pedestal assemblies. Tighten the bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
     
    Valve cover. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
     
    Negative battery cables
