Removal & Installation



2-Wheel Drive Coil Spring Suspension
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm on a floor jack.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Shock absorber
     

  6.  
  7. Compress the spring.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Support the upper control arm and knuckle.



    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Lower ball joint
     

  10.  
  11. Lower the jack and tighten the compressor to allow coil spring removal. Catch the isolator pad.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the coil spring and raise the control arm into position.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Lower ball joint. Tighten the nut to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm), plus a 90 degree turn (1500 Series), or, 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm) (HD Series)
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Stabilizer bar link. Tighten the nut to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
     
    Front wheel
     

  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle and allow the suspension to take the weight. Tighten the front and rear control arm pivot bolts to 150 ft. lbs. (204 Nm) LD; 210 ft. lbs. (285 Nm) HD
  6.  

4-Wheel Drive Coil Over Suspension
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the shock.

  5. Install the shock assembly in the Branick 7200® or equivalent spring removal/installation tool.
  6.  
  7. Compress the spring.
  8.  
  9. Position the shock wrench 9362, on shock shaft retaining nut. Next, insert 8 mm socket though Wrench onto hex located on end of shock shaft. While holding shock shaft from turning, remove nut from shock shaft using Wrench.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper shock nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the shock upper mounting plate.
  14.  
  15. Remove and inspect the upper spring isolator.
  16.  
  17. Remove the shock.

To install:

  1. Position the shock into the coil spring.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper isolator.
  4.  
  5. Install the upper shock mounting plate.
  6.  
  7. Install the shock upper mounting nut.
  8.  
  9. Install the shock wrench 9362 (on end of a torque wrench), on shock shaft retaining nut. Next, insert 8 mm socket though Wrench onto hex located on end of shock shaft. While holding the shock shaft from turning, tighten nut using Wrench to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Decompress the spring.
  12.  
  13. Remove the shock assembly from the spring compressor tool.
  14.  
  15. Install the shock assembly.
  16.  

4-Wheel Drive Link/Coil Suspension
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Support the axle on a floor jack.
  4.  
  5. Place alignment marks on the lower arm adjuster and axle bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Upper control arm and loosen the lower arm bolts
     
    Track bar from the frame rail bracket
     
    Drag link from the Pitman arm
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Shock absorber
     

  8.  
  9. Lower the jack and remove the coil spring.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the coil spring and raise the axle into position.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Stabilizer bar link. Tighten the nut to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Track bar
     
    Drag link
     
    On 4WD, the front driveshaft
     
    Upper control arm and lower arm bolts. Upper arm nuts to 110 ft. lbs. (149 Nm); lower arm nuts to 160 ft. lbs. (217 Nm)
