Lower Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



Independent Front Suspension
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower control arm
  4.  
  5. Secure the control arm in a soft jaw vise.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bushing (3) using special tool C-4212F (PRESS) (1), 9772-6 (receiver) (6), 9772-4 (SPACER) (5) and 9772-3 (driver) (2)

To install:

  1. Using special tools install lower control arm bushings.
  2.  
  3. Remove the control arm from the vise.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Perform a wheel alignment.
  8.  

Lower Control Arm Shock Bushing 4WD Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Support the lower control arm outboard end.
  8.  
  9. Remove the caliper adapter with the caliper.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rotor.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper ball joint retaining nut and separate the upper ball joint from the knuckle using separator 9360.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor wire from the knuckle and upper control arm.
  16.  
  17. Remove the stabilizer link lower nut.
  18.  
  19. Remove the axle hub nut.
  20.  
  21. Remove the shock lower bolt/nut from the lower control arm then move the shock out of the way to allow the C4212-F press to used.
  22.  
  23. Install special tools to press the bushing (3) out of the lower control arm (4) using special tools C-4212-F (Press) (1), 9653-1 (driver) (5) and 9653-2 (Receiver) (2).

To install:

  1. Install the new shock bushing (3) into the lower control arm (4) using tools C-4212-F (Press) (1), 9653-3 (driver) (2), 9773 (Receiver) (5) will automatically set the depth of the bushing in the control arm.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower part of the shock into the lower control arm shock bushing.
  4.  
  5. Install and position bolt so head of the bolt is facing rearward of vehicle and hand start nut. Tighten the bolt and nut to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the upper ball joint to the knuckle and install the retaining nut.
  8.  
  9. Install and tighten the axle hub nut.
  10.  
  11. Install the stabilizer link lower nut.
  12.  
  13. Reconnect the wheel speed sensor wiring to the knuckle and upper control arm.
  14.  
  15. Install the brake rotor.
  16.  
  17. Install the caliper adapter with the brake caliper.
  18.  
  19. Remove the support from the lower control arm outboard end.
  20.  
  21. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  22.  
  23. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.

Removal & Installation



2-Wheel Drive Independent Front Suspension
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm with a floor jack.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:


  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Lower ball joint
     
    Coil spring
     
    Crossmember nuts
     
    Lower control arm
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm. Tighten the crossmember nuts to 145 ft. lbs. (196 Nm).
     
    Coil spring
     
    Lower ball joint. Tighten the nut to 135 ft. lbs. (183 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper ball joint nut. Separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle with remover tool 8677.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front halfshaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove the shock absorber lower nut/bolt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the stabilizer bar link.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower ball joint nut. Separate ball the joint from the steering knuckle with remover tool 8677.
  16.  
  17. Remove the control arm pivot bolts and suspension arm from frame rail brackets.

To install:

  1. Position the lower control arm at the frame rail brackets. Install the pivot bolts and nuts. Tighten the nuts finger-tight.
    WARNING
    The ball joint stud taper must be clean and dry before installing the knuckle. Clean the stud taper with mineral spirits to remove dirt and grease.

  3. Insert the lower ball joint stud into the steering knuckle. Install and tighten the retaining nut to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm), (on 1500 series only turn an additional 90 degrees).
  4.  
  5. Install shock absorber lower bolt/nut and tighten to 155 ft. lbs. (210 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the front halfshaft.
  8.  
  9. Insert the upper ball joint into the steering knuckle. Install and tighten the retaining nut to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm), (on 1500 series only an additional 90 degree turn is required).
  10.  
  11. Install the stabilizer bar link.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the lower control arm front pivot nut to 150 ft. lbs. (204 Nm). Tighten rear pivot bolt to 150 ft. lbs. (204 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Perform a wheel alignment.
  20.  

4-Wheel Drive Independent Front Suspension
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Upper ball joint from the knuckle
     
    Halfshaft
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Shock absorber lower bolt
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Lower ball joint from the knuckle
     
    Lower control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    The ball stud taper must be clean and dry before installation.



    Lower control arm. Tighten bolts finger-tight.
     
    Torsion bar
     



    Lower ball joint. Tighten the nut to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm) (on 1500 series, plus 90 degrees).
     
    Shock absorber lower bolt. Torque it to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
     
    Halfshaft
     
    Upper ball joint. Tighten the nut to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) (on 1500 series, plus 90 degrees).
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     

  2.  
  3. Tighten the pivot bolts to 150 ft. lbs. (204 Nm).

    Front wheel
     

  4.  

Link/Coil Suspension
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Paint or scribe matchmarks on the cam adjusters and suspension arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower arm nut, cam and cam bolt
     
    Nut and bolt from the frame rail
     
    Lower arm
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm. Tighten bolts finger-tight. Align the reference marks.
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the truck to load the suspension
  4.  
  5. Tighten the nuts to 160 ft. lbs. (217 Nm).
  6.
