Transmission Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. With vehicle in neutral, position vehicle on hoist.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove shift boot bezel screws and slide boot upward on shift lever extension.
  8.  
  9. Remove shift lever extension from the shift tower and lever assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove skid plate, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Remove drain plug and drain fluid.
  14.  
  15. Mark propeller shaft/shafts and companion flange yoke/yokes for installation reference and remove propeller shaft/shafts.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect harness from clips on transmission housing.
  18.  
  19. Remove transfer case linkage 4x4 equipped.
  20.  
  21. Remove transfer case mounting nuts and remove transfer case 4x4 equipped.
  22.  
  23. Remove slave cylinder mounting nut and remove cylinder.
  24.  
  25. Remove starter motor, 5.7L structural dust cover bolts to clutch housing and dust shield bolts.
    WARNING
    On 5.7L engine do not remove structural dust cover from engine block. If cover is removed clutch housing and structural dust cover must be aligned with the engine.

  27. Remove exhaust bracket bolts and remove bracket.
  28.  
  29. Support engine with adjustable jack stand and wood block.
  30.  
  31. Support and secure transmission to a transmission jack with safety chains.
  32.  
  33. Remove transmission mount bolts.
  34.  
  35. Remove rear crossmember bolts and remove crossmember with transmission mount.
  36.  
  37. Remove bolts attaching transmission to the engine.
  38.  
  39. Move transmission rearward until input shaft is clear of clutch disc and pressure plate. Then lower jack and remove transmission from under vehicle.
  40.  

To install:

  1. Clean transmission front housing mounting surface.
  2.  
  3. Apply a light coat of Mopar® high temperature bearing grease or equivalent to contact surfaces of following components:

    Release fork
     
    Release fork ball stud
     
    Release bearing slide
     
    Input shaft splines
     
    Release bearing bore
     

  4.  
  5. Support and secure transmission to jack.
  6.  
  7. Raise and align transmission input shaft with clutch disc, then slide transmission into place.
  8.  
  9. Install exhaust bracket.
  10.  
  11. Verify front housing is fully seated. Install transmission bolts without washers and tighten bolts into the engine to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm). Tighten the bolts with washers into the transmission to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install crossmember and tighten nuts to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install transmission mount bolts and tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install front dust shield tighten bolt to 40 inch lbs. (4.5 Nm). On 5.7L if structural dust cover was removed, install onto the transmission and engine.
  18.  
  19. Install structural dust cover and tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install starter motor 5.7L engine.
  22.  
  23. Connect transmission harnesses to clips on case and connect switches.
  24.  
  25. Install slave cylinder and tighten cylinder nuts to 200 inch lbs. (23 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install transfer case and transfer case linkage 4x4 equipped.
  28.  
  29. Remove transmission jack.
  30.  
  31. Install propeller shaft/shafts with reference marks aligned.
  32.  
  33. Install exhaust on the exhaust manifolds.
  34.  
  35. Fill transmission with lubricant. Correct fill level is to bottom edge of fill plug hole.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. With vehicle in neutral, position vehicle on hoist.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove shift knob, boot, shift lever extension and console.
  8.  
  9. Remove 4WD shift boot if equipped and remove floor console.
  10.  
  11. Remove skid plate, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Remove drain plug from rear housing and drain fluid.
  14.  
  15. Mark propeller shafts and companion flange yokes for installation reference and remove propeller shafts.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect harness from clips on transmission housing.
  18.  
  19. Remove transfer case linkage if equipped.
  20.  
  21. Remove transfer case mounting nuts and remove transfer case if equipped.
  22.  
  23. Remove slave cylinder mounting nut and remove cylinder.
  24.  
  25. Remove starter motor, structural dust cover bolts to clutch housing, dust shield bolt and suspension crossmember.
    WARNING
    Do not remove structural dust cover from engine block. If cover is removed clutch housing and cover must be aligned with the engine.

  27. Remove exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifolds.
  28.  
  29. Support engine with adjustable jack stand and wood block.
  30.  
  31. Support and secure transmission to a transmission jack with safety chains.
  32.  
  33. Remove bolts from the rear transmission mount.
  34.  
  35. Remove the rear crossmember and transmission mount.
  36.  
  37. Remove transmission to the engine bolts.
  38.  
  39. Move transmission rearward until input shaft is clear of clutch disc and pressure plate. Then lower jack and remove transmission from under vehicle.
  40.  

To install:

  1. Clean transmission front housing mounting surface.
  2.  
  3. Apply a light coat of Mopar® high temperature bearing grease or equivalent to contact surfaces of following components:

    Release fork
     
    Release fork ball stud
     
    Release bearing slide
     
    Input shaft splines
     
    Release bearing bore
     

  4.  
  5. Support and secure transmission to jack.
  6.  
  7. Raise and align transmission input shaft with clutch disc, then slide transmission into place.
  8.  
  9. Verify front housing is fully seated. Install transmission bolts without washers (1) and tighten bolts into the engine to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm). Tighten the bolts with washers into the transmission to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install rear crossmember and tighten nuts to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install transmission rear mount bolts and tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install front dust shield tighten bolt to 40 in. lbs. (4.5 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install structural cover to transmission bolts and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install starter motor.
  20.  
  21. Install suspension crossmember and tighten nuts to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Connect transmission harnesses to clips on case and connect switches.
  24.  
  25. Install slave cylinder and tighten cylinder nuts to 200 in. lbs. (23 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install transfer case and transfer case linkage if equipped.
  28.  
  29. Remove transmission jack.
  30.  
  31. Install propeller shafts with reference marks aligned.
  32.  
  33. Install exhaust on the exhaust manifolds.
  34.  
  35. Fill transmission with lubricant. Correct fill level is to bottom edge of fill plug hole.
  36.  
  37. Install inner shift boot, extension lever, console, boot and shift knob.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. With vehicle in neutral, position it on a hoist.
  4.  
  5. Mark installation reference marks on the propeller shaft, pinion yoke and transmission output shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove propeller shaft clamp bolts and remove shaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove shift cover bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove hydraulic clutch line quick connector at the transmission with Clutch Line Disconnect Tool 6638 or 6638A to disconnect.
  12.  
  13. Remove reverse lockout solenoid connector.
  14.  
  15. Remove fuel line clip from top plate stud.
  16.  
  17. Remove back up lamp switch connector.
  18.  
  19. Position transmission jack and secure to transmission.
  20.  
  21. Remove transmission to clutch housing bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove transmission mount bolts.
  24.  
  25. Remove transmission crossmember bolts.
  26.  
  27. Slide transmission back to clear the bell housing. Then lower transmission.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Clean transmission front housing mounting surface.
  2.  
  3. Apply a light coat of Mopar® high temperature bearing grease or equivalent to contact surfaces of following components:

    Release fork
     
    Release fork ball stud
     
    Release bearing slide
     
    Input shaft splines
     
    Release bearing bore
     

  4.  
  5. Slide transmission back into the clutch and seat against clutch housing.
  6.  
  7. Install transmission bolts to clutch housing bolts and tighten to and tighten bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install transmission crossmember and bolts/nuts. Tighten nuts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install transmission mount bolts and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Remove transmission jack.
  14.  
  15. Install back up lamp switch connector.
  16.  
  17. Install fuel line to top plate stud.
  18.  
  19. Install reverse lockout solenoid harness connector.
  20.  
  21. Install hydraulic clutch quick connector to the slave cylinder.
  22.  
  23. Clean transmission shifter tower sealing surfaces and apply a bead of Mopar® Gasket Maker.
  24.  
  25. Install shifter tower and tighten bolts to 156 inch lbs. (18 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install propeller shaft with reference marks aligned.
    WARNING
    The drive shaft strap bolts must be replaced or cleaned and Loctite® 242 applied. Replace drive shaft joint straps whenever they are removed. The straps slightly deform when torqued in place. Reuse of the straps may result in reduced clamp load on the universal joint cap.
