Axle Shaft, Bearing & Seal

Removal & Installation



C-Clip Type
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Brake drum
     
    Differential cover
     
    Differential gear shaft retainer
     
    Differential gear shaft
     
    C-clip
     
    Axle shaft
     
    Axle seal
     
    Axle bearing

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Axle bearing
     
    Axle seal
     
    Axle shaft
     
    C-clip
     
    Differential gear shaft. Use Loctite® and tighten the retainer to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
     
    Differential cover. Tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
     
    Brake drum
     
    Rear wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the axle assembly with gear oil and check for leaks.
  4.  

Non C-Clip Type
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove axle bolts from axle flange.

  5. Remove the axle shaft from axle.
  6.  
  7. With Socket 10051 remove hub nut with integrated lock washer from hub spindle.

  9. Slide the hub/rotor with bearings off hub spindle with the use of Guide tool 10064.
  10.  
  11. Remove outer bearing from hub.
  12.  
  13. Remove the hub seal from the back of the hub with seal puller.
  14.  
  15. Remove the inner bearing from hub.
  16.  
  17. Remove the outer and inner bearing race from hub with a hammer and brass drift.

To install:

  1. Install inner and outer hub bearing race, with seal and race driver kit.

  3. Lubricate and install the inner hub bearing into hub.
  4.  
  5. Install the hub seal with seal installer kit.
  6.  
  7. Lubricate and install the outer hub bearing into hub.
  8.  
  9. Install the hub and rotor Guide 10064 into the axle spindle.
  10.  
  11. Carefully install the hub and rotor over Guide 10064 onto the axle spindle.
    WARNING
    Never support hub with just the inner bearing and seal. Failure to follow these instruction will result in damaging the hub seal.

  13. Remove the guide tool.
  14.  
  15. Install the hub bearing nut with integrated lock washer.
    NOTE
    Integrated lock washer tab must be aligned with the spindle keyway.

  17. Tighten the hub nut with Socket 10051 to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm) while rotating the hub. Then back off nut 90 degrees and retighten nut to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm). This will set hub to zero end-play.

  19. Install a new O-ring on axle flange.

  21. Install the axle shaft.
  22.  
  23. Install axle bolts through axle flange and tighten to 98 ft. lbs. (133 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Remove fill plug, from right side of carrier.
  26.  
  27. With the axle level, fill carrier with lubricant to the bottom of the fill plug hole.
  28.  
  29. Install fill plug and tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
    WARNING
    Wheel hub cavities must be filled with lubricate before using axle. Failure to follow these instructions will result in hub bearing damage.

  31. Wheel hub cavities oil fill instruction are as follows:

  33. Raise right end of axle six inches. Hold in this position for one minute to fill left hub with lubricate.
  34.  
  35. Lower the axle.
  36.  
  37. Raise left end of axle six inches. Hold in this position for one minute to fill right hub with lubricate.
  38.  
  39. Lower the axle.
  40.  
  41. Remove fill plug, from right side of carrier.
  42.  
  43. With axle level, fill carrier with lubricant to the bottom of the fill plug hole.
    NOTE
    Axle will require approximately 40 oz. (1.18 L) of additional lubricant.

  45. Install fill plug and tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  46.
