Link/Coil Suspension



Drag Link
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drag link nut from the pitman arm side.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drag link nut from the knuckle side.
  6.  
  7. Remove the drag link from the right knuckle and pitman arm with Puller C-3894A.

To install:

  1. Install the drag link to the pitman arm. Install the nut and tighten to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the drag link to the right steering knuckle. Install the nut and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). Then an additional 90°.
  4.  
  5. Install tie rod to the left steering knuckle and drag link. Install the nuts and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). Then an additional 90°.
  6.  
  7. Remove the supports and lower the vehicle to the surface. Center steering wheel and adjust toe.
  8.  
  9. After adjustment tighten tie rod adjustment sleeve clamp bolts to. 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
    NOTE
    Position the clamp on the sleeve so retaining bolt is located on the bottom side of the sleeve.

Outer Tie Rod End
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
    Do not twist the boot anytime during removal or installation.

  2.  
  3. Loosen the jam nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the outer tie rod end nut from the ball stud.
  6.  
  7. Separate the tie rod ball stud from the knuckle with remover 8677.
    NOTE
    Count and record the number of turns when removing the tie rod end. This will help for installation.

  9. Unthread the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod.
  10.  
  11. Thread the outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod, to it's original position. Refer to your recorded turns.
  12.  
  13. Install the outer tie rod end into the steering knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the ball stud nut on the ball stud to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm). Then turn an additional 90®.
  16.  
  17. Center steering wheel and adjust toe.
  18.  
  19. Tighten jam nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  20.  

Pitman Arm
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drag link nut from the pitman arm .
  4.  
  5. Install puller C-3894-A and separate the drag link from the pitman arm.

  7. Mark the pitman arm and shaft positions for installation reference. Remove the nut and washer from the pitman arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the pitman arm with Puller 9615 or an equivalent pitman arm puller tool.

To install:

  1. Align reference marks and install pitman arm.
  2.  
  3. Install the lock washer and retaining nut on the pitman shaft and tighten nut to 185 ft. lbs. (251 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the drag link to the pitman arm. Install the nut and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). Then an additional 90°.
  6.  
  7. Remove the supports and lower the vehicle to the surface. Center steering wheel and adjust toe.
  8.  
  9. After adjustment tighten tie rod adjustment sleeve clamp bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Position the clamp on the sleeve so retaining bolt is located on the bottom side of the sleeve.
  12.  

Steering Damper Shock
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering damper mounting nuts and bolts at axle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering damper mounting nuts and bolts at linkage.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering damper shock from the linkage using special tool 9360 puller.

  9. Remove the steering damper.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering damper on the axle. Tighten nut to 75 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the steering damper on the linkage. Tighten nut to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
  4.  

Tie Rod End
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove tie rod nuts.
  4.  
  5. Remove tie rod from drag link and left knuckle with remover C-4150A.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install tie rod to the left steering knuckle and drag link. Install the nuts and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). Then an additional 90°.
  2.  
  3. Remove the supports and lower the vehicle to the surface. Center steering wheel and adjust toe.
  4.  
  5. After adjustment tighten tie rod adjustment sleeve clamp bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
    NOTE
    Position the clamp on the sleeve so retaining bolt is located on the bottom side of the sleeve.
