Rear Differential Assembly

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Drain the differential fluid.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark the driveshaft flange and differential flange and remove the driveshaft from the differential.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear differential damper.
  6.  
  7. Support the differential assembly with a suitable jack and remove the left and right support brackets.
  8.  
  9. Remove the breather tube from the fitting near the crossmember mount.
  10.  
  11. Using a suitable prytool, carefully pry out the inner CV-joint assemblies enough to release the locking rings from the differential.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper support bracket bolts and washers.
  14.  
  15. Carefully lower the jack supporting the differential assembly enough to remove the CV-joints from the differential.
  16.  
  17. Remove the differential mounting bracket.

To install:
  1. Installation is the reverse of removal, observing the following points and specifications:

    Thinly coat the differential oil seal lips with a light petroleum grease before installing the axles.
     
    Install new set rings on the splined shafts of the inner CV-joints.
     
    Make sure the inner CV-joints are fully seated into the differential.
     
    Align the matchmarks of the driveshaft flange and differential flange.
     
    Refill the differential with Honda CVT Fluid. ATF Dexron II can be substituted temporarily.

  3. Tighten the fasteners to the following specifications:

    Differential damper bolts: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Driveshaft mounting bolts: 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm)
     
    Differential mounting bracket-to-body bolts: 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm)
     
    Differential side bracket-to-differential bolts: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Differential mounting bracket-to-differential bolts: 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm)
