REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



R-12 Models

  1. Remove the air cleaner.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the battery.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the manifold.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect and tag the wires at the starter.
  8.  
  9. Remove the three starter mounting bolts. Turn the starter sideways and pull it out.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  12.  

R-15, R-17 and Gordini Models

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the wires from the starter and tag them for installation.
  4.  
  5. Unbolt and remove the heat shield from the manifold.
  6.  
  7. Remove the heater hose support clip.
  8.  
  9. Remove the three starter mounting bolts and pull the starter out.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  12.  

R-18, Sport Wagon and Fuego Models

  1. Disconnect the battery. Remove the air cleaner. Raise and support the car on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the heater hoses, if they interfere.
  4.  
  5. Remove the catalytic converter shield and the converter.
  6.  
  7. Remove the starter heat shield.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect and tag the starter wires.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper left starter mount bolt and loosen the upper right bolt.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the rear support bracket bolt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the spacer.
  16.  
  17. Remove the three mounting bolts and remove the starter.
  18.  
  19. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note that you must tighten the three starter mounting bolts before tightening the rear support bolt.

LeCar Models

  1. Remove the air cleaner.
  2.  
  3. Clamp the carburetor heater hoses.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the battery.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the accelerator linkage.
  8.  
  9. Remove the exhaust manifold.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect and tag the starter wires.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower starter bolt using a 3 / 8 inch drive ratchet and 13mm socket, holding the nut with a 13mm box wrench. Remove the upper bolt with special tool Ele. 565 or its equivalent.
  14.  
  15. Remove the starter.
  16.  
  17. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  18.  

Alliance and Encore Models

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and tag the starter wires.
  4.  
  5. Remove the starter support bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the three starter mount bolts and remove the starter.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note that the three mounting bolts must be tightened before tightening the support bolt.

WARNING
To avoid cross-threading the bolts, make certain that the starter motor locating dowel is centered in its hole.

STARTER DRIVE REPLACEMENT

To replace the starter drive, the starter body must be disassembled. Renault cars have used thirteen different starters since 1975. Check the application chart, find your starter and use the accompanying exploded view for disassembly. When the starter is disassembled, the starter drive is removed by unfastening the snapring and stop ring, then sliding the drive off the armature shaft.

Take out the plug at the end of the solenoid opposite the electrical terminals. Apply current to the solenoid as shown in the accompanying illustration. Check the clearance between the starter drive end and the end frame. The clearance should be 0.059 in. If not, turn the adjusting screw, uncovered by removing the end plug, until the proper clearance is obtained.

On the Paris-Rhone D 10E 79, clearance is adjusted with an eccentric screw which passes through the starter drive fork.
