  1. Using a caliper micrometer, measure the valve spring free length. All of the intake springs should measure the same, and all of the exhaust springs should measure the same as well.

  3. Any springs that do not measure the same, whether from the intake side or the exhaust side, should be replaced.
  4.  
  5. Check the valve springs for squareness on a flat surface. The springs should be perpendicular to the surface; a carpenter's square can be used as a gauge.
  6.  
  7. If still unsure of the springs' condition, have a repair shop check the springs' installed height and spring pressure. Any springs that do not meet the specifications given in the chart should be replaced.
