The Valve Spring removal and installation procedure is covered under Valves, earlier in this section.
- Using a caliper micrometer, measure the valve spring free length. All of the intake springs should measure the same, and all of the exhaust springs should measure the same as well.
- Any springs that do not measure the same, whether from the intake side or the exhaust side, should be replaced.
- Check the valve springs for squareness on a flat surface. The springs should be perpendicular to the surface; a carpenter's square can be used as a gauge.
- If still unsure of the springs' condition, have a repair shop check the springs' installed height and spring pressure. Any springs that do not meet the specifications given in the chart should be replaced.
