The water pump cannot be repaired. It is a sealed unit.

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the alternator and move it out of the way.
  6.  
  7. Remove the water pump tensioner, the drive belt, the air pump, the water pump pulley and toothed belt and the temperature sending unit.
  8.  
  9. Unbolt and remove the pump. It may be necessary to tap the pump free with a wood mallet.
  10.  
  11. Clean the gasket mating surfaces thoroughly. Install the pump using a new gasket. Do not use sealer.
  12.  

R-12 Models

The pump cannot be repaired, just replaced.

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the hoses at the pump.
  6.  
  7. Remove the alternator and water pump drive bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the water pump pulley.
  10.  
  11. Remove the camshaft pulley.
  12.  
  13. Remove the pump bolts and tap the pump loose with a wood or rubber mallet.
  14.  
  15. Clean the mating surfaces thoroughly. Installation is the reverse of removal. Always use a new gasket. Do not use sealer on the gasket!

R-15, R-17 and Gordini Models, Except 1975 Canadian Gordini

The pump cannot be repaired, just replaced.

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the hoses at the pump.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the pump drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fan shroud.
  10.  
  11. Remove the radiator.
  12.  
  13. Remove the fan and pump pulley.
  14.  
  15. Remove the pump belt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the pump bolts and tap the pump loose with a wood or rubber mallet.
  18.  
  19. Clean the gasket surfaces thoroughly. Always use a new gasket. Do not use sealer on the gasket.
  20.  
  21. Installation is the reverse of removal.

1975 Canadian Gordini Model

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the hoses at the pump.
  6.  
  7. Remove the pump and alternator drive belts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the alternator adjuster bolt from the pump.
  10.  
  11. Remove the pump pulley.
  12.  
  13. Remove the camshaft pulley.
  14.  
  15. Remove the water pump bolts and tap it loose with a wood or plastic mallet.
  16.  
  17. Remove the plate, discard the gasket and clean the gasket surfaces thoroughly.
  18.  
  19. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  20.  

R-18 and Fuego Models

The pump cannot be repaired, just replaced.

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the hoses at the pump.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper grille crossmember.
  8.  
  9. Remove the grille.
  10.  
  11. Remove the radiator and fan.
  12.  
  13. Remove the pump drive belt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the pump bolts and tap the pump loose with a wood or rubber mallet.
  16.  
  17. Clean the gasket surfaces thoroughly. Always use a new gasket. Do not use sealer on the gasket. Installation is the reverse of removal.
