1977 California models and all 1978-83 models must be adjusted with the use of a CO meter to obtain the correct emissions reading and idle speed. It is advised that these procedures be performed only by a qualified service person. Previous models may be adjusted by the lean drop method.

Without a CO Meter (1975-77 Non-California)
  1. Clamp off the air injection hose between the diverter valve and the engine, using the appropriate special tool.
  2.
  3. Turn the throttle plate screw so that the engine speed is 775 rpm.
  4.
  5. Turn the idle mixture screw to obtain the highest possible idle speed.
  6.
  7. Lower the engine speed 20-25 rpm by turning the idle mixture screw clockwise. Remove the air injection hose blockoff clamp and check the idle speed which should be as listed in the Tune-Up Chart. If the idle speed is incorrect, turn the throttle plate screw to adjust.
  8.

With a CO Meter

  2.
  3. Turn the throttle plate screw so that the engine speed is 775 rpm.
  4.
  5. Turn the idle mixture screw to obtain the following readings:1976-79 2.5% + .5% [li7p9] - 2%1980-85 Federal 2.0% + .5% [li10p3] - 2%
  6.
  7. Remove the air injection hose blockoff clamp and recheck the idle speed. Idle speeds are given in the Tune-Up Chart.
  8.
  9. Repeat Steps 2-4 if necessary.
  10.

With a Vacuum Gauge
  1. Tee a vacuum gauge into the line which runs from the vacuum solenoid regulator to the carburetor. The amount of vacuum applied to the carburetor actuators will be measured.
  2.
  3. Adjust the fuel metering screw to obtain an idle speed of 750 - 50 rpm.
  4.
  5. Adjust the mixture screw to obtain a vacuum reading of 1.5 - 1.2 Hg.
  6.
  7. Readjust the fuel metering screw to correct the idle speed.
  8.

To obtain the correct idle speed, only the fuel metering screw should be adjusted.
