The engine identification plate is attached to the engine block on the left side at the rear, just below the head. On earlier models, all plates were uniformly rectangular on all engines. On later models, however, the size and shape of the plate was determined by available space. Through 1979 the plate showed the engine type, index and manufacturing sequence number. Beginning in 1980, the plate shows, as illustrated:

  1. the engine type;
  2.  
  3. The French Ministry of Mines homologation number;
  4.  
  5. Engine equipment;
  6.  
  7. Manufacturer's identification number;
  8.  
  9. Engine index number;
  10.  
  11. the manufacturing sequence number;
  12.
