Removal & Installation



3.4L Engine
  1. Disconnect the spark plug wires. Note the position from which the wires are removed.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 2 screws that secure the ignition coil to the ignition control module.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition coil.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the ignition coil.
    NOTE
    Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the two attaching screws and tighten them to 40 inch lbs. (4.5 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the spark plug wires.
  6.  

3.5L Engine
  1. Remove the intake manifold cover.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose from the intake manifold.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector from the ignition coil.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the spark plug wires (2, 4, and 6) from the ignition coil.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the spark plug wires (1, 3, and 5) from the ignition coil.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine harness clip from the ignition coil bracket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) clip from the ignition coil bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ignition coil bolts/nuts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the ignition coil.
  18.  
  19. Remove the ignition coil studs, if necessary.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the ignition coil studs, if necessary, and tighten the studs to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the ignition coil.
  4.  
  5. Install the ignition coil bolts/nuts, and tighten the bolts/nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the HO2S clip to the ignition coil bracket.
  8.  
  9. Install the engine harness clip to the ignition coil bracket.
  10.  
  11. Connect the spark plug wires (1, 3, and 5) to the ignition coil.
  12.  
  13. Connect the spark plug wires (2, 4, and 6) to the ignition coil.
  14.  
  15. Connect the engine harness electrical connector to the ignition coil.
  16.  
  17. Connect the brake booster vacuum hose to the intake manifold.
  18.  
  19. Install the intake manifold cover.
  20.  

3.6L Engine
Bank 1
  1. Turn the ignition OFF .
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear.
  6.  
  7. Remove and reposition the front portion of the front fender liners in order to gain access to the frame front bolts.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Position a floor jack at the front center section of the frame in order to support the powertrain.
  12.  
  13. Remove the frame front bolts.
    WARNING
    Do not lower the powertrain more than 4 inches (100mm)

  14.  
  15. Carefully lower the powertrain in order to provide access.
  16.  
  17. Reposition the Evaporative emission (EVAP) purge hoses as necessary in order to provide access.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the applicable ignition coil electrical connectors.
  20.  
  21. Remove the ignition coil bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the ignition coils.

To install:

  1. Install the ignition coils.
  2.  
  3. Install the ignition coil bolts and tighten them to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  6.  
  7. Use the floor jack in order to raise the powertrain until the frame contacts the chassis.
  8.  
  9. Install the frame front bolts.
  10.  
  11. Raise and support the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Install the front fender liners.
  14.  
  15. Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  

Bank 2
  1. Turn the ignition OFF .
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the applicable ignition coil electrical connector(s).
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition coil bolt(s).
  6.  
  7. Remove the ignition coil(s).
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the ignition coil(s).
  2.  
  3. Install the ignition coil bolts and tighten them to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the ignition coil electrical connector(s).
  6.
