Removal & Installation



3.4L & 3.5L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Drain the coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Crankshaft balancer
     
    Drive belt tensioner
     
    Power steering pump and lines. Do not disconnect the lines from the pump.
     
    Thermostat bypass pipe from the front cover
     
    Radiator outlet hose from the water pump
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Upper and lower Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor wire harness bracket from the front cover
     
    CKP sensor from the front cover
     
    Front cover and gasket
     
    Front cover. Refer to the accompanying figure and torque bolts (2) to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm), bolts (3) to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) and bolts (1) to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).

  9. Apply a 0.20 inch (5mm) bead of sealer to both sides of the lower tabs of the engine front cover gasket.

    Water pump to the front cover. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Water pump pulley. Torque the bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    CKP sensor to the front cover
     
    Upper/lower CKP wire harness brackets to the front cover
     
    Radiator outlet hose to the water pump
     
    Thermostat bypass pipe to the front cover
     
    Power steering pump and lines
     
    Drive belt tensioner
     
    Crankshaft balancer
     
    Negative battery cable

  11. Fill the engine with oil.
  12.  
  13. Fill the coolant system.
  14.  
  15. Start the vehicle and verify that the engine is running properly.
  16.  

3.6L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine/transaxle assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the alternator, power steering pump and A/C compressor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the crankshaft balancer.
  8.  
  9. Remove the camshaft position actuator valve bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the camshaft position actuator valves from the front cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the engine front cover bolts.
    NOTE
    Do not pry between the engine front cover and the camshaft position sensors or the camshaft position actuators in order to shear the RTV. Use the pry points and a bolt in the jackscrew hole in order to remove the engine front cover. Damage to the camshaft position sensors or the camshaft position actuators may occur if the camshaft position sensors or the camshaft position actuators are used to pry against in order to remove the engine front cover.

    Fig. Loosely install a 10 x 1.5 mm bolt in the "jackscrew" hole (1). Using the pry points (2) located at the edge of the front cover and the "jackscrew", shear the RTV sealant-3.6L engine

  15. Loosely install a 10 x 1.5 mm bolt in the "jackscrew" hole (1).
  16.  
  17. Using the pry points (2) located at the edge of the front cover and the "jackscrew", shear the RTV sealant.
  18.  
  19. Remove the engine front cover.

  25. Place a 3mm (0.118 in) bead of RTV sealant, GM P/N 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148) or equivalent, on the engine front cover as shown (1).

  27. Place the engine front cover onto tool EN 46109 and slide into position.
  28.  
  29. Remove tool EN 46109 from the cylinder block.
  30.  
  31. Hand start all the front cover bolts.

  33. Tighten the engine front cover bolts in the sequence shown. Tighten the engine front cover bolts in sequence to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).

  35. Install NEW O-rings on the camshaft position sensor.
  36.  
  37. Place the camshaft position sensors in position on the front cover.
  38.  
  39. Install the camshaft position sensor bolts. Tighten the camshaft position sensor bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

  41. Place the camshaft position actuator valves in position on the front cover.
  42.  
  43. Install the camshaft position actuator valve bolts. Tighten the camshaft position actuator valve bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

  45. The EN 46106 must be installed onto the flywheel.
  46.  
  47. Use tool J 41998-B, nut, bearing and washer to install the crankshaft balancer.
    NOTE
    Do not lubricate the crankshaft front oil seal or crankshaft balancer sealing surfaces. The crankshaft balancer is installed into a dry seal.

  49. Apply lubricant to the inside of the crankshaft balancer hub bore.
  50.  
  51. Place the crankshaft balancer in position on the crankshaft.
  52.  
  53. Thread tool J 41998-B in the crankshaft. Ensure you engage at least 10 threads of tool J 41998-B before pressing the crankshaft balancer in place.

  55. Push the crankshaft balancer into position by tightening the nut on tool J 41998-B until the large washer bottoms out on the crankshaft end.
  56.  
  57. Remove tool J 41998-B.
  58.  
  59. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  60.  
  61. Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt. Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  62.  
  63. Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt an additional 150 degrees using tool J 45059.
  64.  
  65. Remove tool EN 46106.
  66.  
  67. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
