Tie Rod Ends

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tie rod ball stud nut.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the tie rod jam nut.
    NOTE
    Do not attempt to free the ball stud by using a pickle fork or wedge type tool, because seal or bushing damage could result. Use the proper tool to separate all ball joints.

  9. Use the special tool J 24319-B in order to separate the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the outer tie rod from the inner tie rod.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the outer tie rod to the inner tie rod. Do not tighten the tie rod jam nut.
  2.  
  3. Install the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle.
    NOTE
    This is a prevailing torque type fastener. This fastener may be reused ONLY if:



    The fastener and its counterpart are clean and free from rust
     
    The fastener develops 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm) of torque (drag) against its counterpart prior to the fastener seating.
     

  4.  
  5. If the fastener does not meet these criteria, replace the fastener.
  6.  
  7. Install the tie rod ball stud nut, and tighten the tie rod ball stud nut to 22 ft. lbs. + 2 flats (30 Nm + 120 degrees).
    NOTE
    Ensure that 2.5-4.5 tie rod end threads are visible beyond the tie rod nut nylon.

  8.  
  9. Install the front tire and wheel.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Inspect and adjust the toe as necessary.
  14.
