Gasoline Engines

Pan removal may be easier if the engine is turned to No. 1 cylinder firing position. This positions the crankshaft in the path of least resistance for pan removal.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2.
  3. Remove the fan shroud-to-radiator tie bar screws.
  4.
  5. Remove the air cleaner and disconnect the throttle linkage.
  6.
  7. Raise the car and support it on jackstands.

  12.
  13. Remove the front engine mounting bolts.
  14.
  15. Raise the engine by placing a jack under the crankshaft pulley mounting.

WARNING
On air conditioned cars, place a support under the right-side of the transmission before raising the engine. If you don't do this, the engine and transmission will cock to the right due to the weight of the air conditioning equipment.

  1. Remove the oil pan bolts and remove the pan.
  2.
  3. Installation is the reverse of removal. Use gasket sealer and new gaskets (if gaskets are used). Tighten the pan bolts to 14 ft. lbs.
