Three Speed Column Shift
1974-77 VEHICLES
  1. Place the transmission in reverse.
  2.  
  3. Raise the car and support it with jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the swivel bolts on the shift rods at the transmission. Make sure the shift rods are free to move in the swivels.
  6.  
  7. Push up on the reverse shift rod until the detent in the column is felt and tighten the swivel bolt for the first/reverse rod.
  8.  
  9. Place the transmission in neutral and insert a 3 / 16 in. rod through the 2-3 shift lever and into the alignment hole. Tighten the swivel bolt at the transmission.
  10.  
  11. Lower the car. Check the shifter operation. Place the shifter in reverse, and the ignition switch in the LOCK position. Make sure the ignition key can be removed and that the steering wheel will not turn.
  12.  

1978-81 VEHICLES
  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the car.
  4.  
  5. Remove the retainer from the shift rods.
  6.  
  7. Place the transmission levers in Neutral.
  8.  
  9. Align the control levers and place a 1 / 4 inch gauge pin into the levers and brackets, with the shift handle in Neutral.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the nuts on the shift rods and adjust the trunnion and pin assembly on First/Reverse, then tighten the nuts and install the shift rod and retainer.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the shift rod nut and adjust the trunnion and pin assembly on Second/Third, then tighten the nuts and install the shift rod and retainer.
  14.  
  15. Remove the gauge pin from the control lever assembly and check the operation of the control lever. Re-adjust as required.
  16.  
  17. Lower the car.
  18.  

Three-Speed Floor Shift
  1. Place the transmission in reverse, and the ignition switch in the LOCK position.
  2.  
  3. Raise the car in the air and support it with jackstands.
  4.  

Do not place the shifter in reverse from below.

  1. Loosen the swivel bolt on the back drive rod at the equalizer. Make sure the rod moves freely in the swivel.
  2.  
  3. Pull down lightly on the back drive rod until a stop is felt. Tighten the swivel bolt.
  4.  
  5. Place the shifter in neutral, and loosen the jam nuts at the shifter assembly.
  6.  
  7. Insert a 1 / 4 in. pin through the shift lever brackets and levers as shown in the illustration. Adjust the swivels to obtain a "free pin" fit at the levers.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the jam nuts.
  10.  
  11. Lower the car and check the shifter operation.
  12.  

Four-Speed Floor Shift
1974 VEHICLES

The four-speed shift linkage is adjusted in exactly the same manner as the Saginaw three speed floor shift described earlier.

1977-79 VEHICLES
  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the car.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the locknuts at the swivels on the shift rods.
  6.  
  7. Set the transmission levers in Neutral.
  8.  
  9. Place the shifter in Neutral.
  10.  
  11. Align the control levers and place a 1 / 4 inch gauge pin into the levers and bracket.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the First/Second shift rod nut against the swivel. Tighten to 10 ft. lbs.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the Third/Fourth shift rod nut against the swivel. Tighten to 10 ft. lbs.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the reverse shift control rod nut to 10 ft. lbs.
  18.  
  19. Remove the gauge pin, check for proper operation of the levers and lower the car.
  20.  

Five-Speed Floor Shift

The five-speed transmission linkage is internal and cannot be adjusted.
