Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Make sure the anti-theft codes for the audio system and navigation system (if equipped) are available.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Drain the cooling system.
  10.  
  11. Remove the alternator belt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the intake manifold cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ignition coil covers.
  16.  
  17. Remove the power steering belt and pump.
  18.  
  19. Remove the power steering hose clamp.
  20.  
  21. Remove the alternator.
  22.  
  23. Remove the fuel feed and return lines.
  24.  
  25. Remove the EVAP canister hose.
  26.  
  27. Remove the intake manifold.
  28.  
  29. Remove the ignition coils.
  30.  
  31. Remove the timing belt.
  32.  
  33. Remove the fuel injector connectors.
  34.  
  35. Disconnect the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor connector
  36.  
  37. Remove the radiator fan switch connectors.
  38.  
  39. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor connector
  40.  
  41. Disconnect the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor connector
  42.  
  43. Disconnect the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) connector
  44.  
  45. Disconnect the Valve Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) solenoid valve connector and oil pressure switch connections.
  46.  
  47. Remove the oil pressure switch connector.
  48.  
  49. Remove the vacuum hoses from the intake air bypass control valve.
  50.  
  51. Remove the fuel rails.
  52.  
  53. Remove the heater hose.
  54.  
  55. Remove the radiator hoses.
  56.  
  57. Remove the ground cable.
  58.  
  59. Remove the exhaust manifolds.
  60.  
  61. Remove the water passage.
  62.  
  63. Remove the camshaft pulleys and back covers.
  64.  
  65. Remove the valve covers.
  66.  
  67. Loosen the cylinder head bolts in sequence and 1 / 3 turns until all bolts are loose.

  69. Remove the cylinder head.
  70.  

To install:

  1. Align the crankshaft and camshaft sprocket TDC marks as shown.

  3. Install the cylinder heads with new gaskets.
  4.  
  5. Apply clean engine oil to the cylinder head bolt threads and flanges.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the cylinder head bolts in sequence as follows:

    Step 1: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
     
    Step 2: 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm)
     
    Step 3: 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm)

  9. Install the timing belt and adjust the valve clearance.
  10.  
  11. Install the valve covers.
  12.  
  13. Install the exhaust manifolds.
  14.  
  15. Install the water passage.
  16.  
  17. Install the fuel rails.
  18.  
  19. Install the vacuum hoses to the intake air bypass control valve.
  20.  
  21. Install the radiator hoses.
  22.  
  23. Install the heater hose.
  24.  
  25. Install the oil pressure switch connector.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the VTEC solenoid valve connector and oil pressure switch connections.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the EGR connector.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the CMP sensor connector.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the CKP sensor connector.
  34.  
  35. Disconnect the radiator fan switch connectors.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect the ECT sensor connector.
  38.  
  39. Disconnect the fuel injector connectors.
  40.  
  41. Install the ignition coils.
  42.  
  43. Install the intake manifold.
  44.  
  45. Install the EVAP canister hose.
  46.  
  47. Install the fuel feed and return lines.
  48.  
  49. Install the alternator.
  50.  
  51. Install the power steering hose clamp.
  52.  
  53. Install the power steering pump and belt.
  54.  
  55. Install the ground cable.
  56.  
  57. Install the ignition coil covers.
  58.  
  59. Install the intake manifold cover.
  60.  
  61. Install the alternator belt.
  62.  
  63. Fill the cooling system.
  64.  
  65. Connect the negative battery cable.
  66.  
  67. Enter the anti-theft codes for the audio system and the navigation system (if equipped).
  68.  
  69. Set the clock on vehicles without navigation.
  70.  
  71. Perform the power window control unit reset procedure.
  72.  
  73. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  74.
