Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions.
  2.  
  3. Turn the crankshaft so the white mark aligns with the pointer.

  5. Make sure the number 1 piston is at Top Dead center (TDC).

  7. Make sure the anti-theft codes for the audio system and navigation system (if equipped) are available.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  10.  
  11. Remove the wheels and engine splash shield.
  12.  
  13. Remove the drive belts.
  14.  
  15. Support the engine with a block of wood and a jack under the oil pan.
  16.  
  17. Remove the ground cable bracket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the upper side engine mount.
  20.  
  21. Remove the dipstick tube.
  22.  
  23. Remove the crankshaft pulley using holder tool shown in the accompanying illustration and a breaker and socket, loosen the 19mm bolt and remove the pulley.

  25. Remove the front upper cover, rear upper cover and the lower cover.

  27. Remove the one of the battery clamp bolts and grind the end as shown in the illustration.

  29. Screw the battery clamp bolt as shown in the illustration to hold the belt adjuster in position. Do not use a wrench, hand tighten only.

  31. Remove the lower side engine mount.

  33. Remove the idler pulley bolt and the pulley.

To install:

  1. If installing a new belt, perform the following steps:
    1. Clean the pulleys, belt guide plate and the upper and lower covers.
    2.  
    3. Set the timing belt drive pulley to TDC by aligning the TDC mark on the tooth of the belt drive pulley with the pointer on the oil pump.

    5. Set the camshaft pulleys to TDC by aligning the TDC marks on the camshaft pulleys with the pointers on the back covers.

    7. Remove the battery clamp bolt.
    8.  
    9. Remove the belt tensioner.
    10.  
    11. Align the holes on the rod and housing of the tensioner.
    12.  
    13. Using a press or other suitable device, slowly compress the tensioner and insert a 0.08 inch (2mm) pin through the housing and rod.

    15. Install the tensioner making sure the pin is still installed.

    17. Apply thread locker to idler pulley bolt then hand tighten the bolt.

    19. Install the belt over the pulleys in this sequence; drive pulley, idler pulley, front camshaft pulley, water pump pulley, rear camshaft pulley and adjusting pulley.

    21. Tighten the idler pulley bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).

    23. Remove the pin from the tensioner.

  3. Install the lower half of the side mount and tighten the 3 long bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm) and the one short bolt to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the timing belt guide plate as shown in the illustration.

  7. Install the lower timing cover and tighten the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).

  9. Install the front and rear upper timing covers and tighten the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten the bolts to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm), using the holding tool to prevent the unit from turning.
  12.  
  13. Rotate the crankshaft pulley about 5 or 6 degrees clockwise so the belt positions itself on the pulleys.
  14.  
  15. Turn the crankshaft pulley so the white mark aligns with the pointer.
  16.  
  17. Check the camshaft pulley marks are aligned. If the marks are aligned, proceed to the next step. If the marks are not aligned, remove the timing belt and reinstall using the steps outlined before this step.

  19. Install the drive belt.
  20.  
  21. Install the upper side mount and tighten the bolts in the sequence illustrated to the specifications in the illustration.

  23. Using a suitable scan tool, perform the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) reset and the Crankshaft position (CKP) pattern clear/learn procedures, following the scan tool manufactures instructions.
  24.  
  25. If installing the old belt, perform the following steps:
    1. Clean the pulleys, belt guide plate and the upper and lower covers.
    2.  
    3. Set the timing belt drive pulley to TDC by aligning the TDC mark on the tooth of the belt drive pulley with the pointer on the oil pump.
    4.  
    5. Set the camshaft pulleys to TDC by aligning the TDC marks on the camshaft pulleys with the pointers on the back covers.
    6.  
    7. Apply thread locker to idler pulley bolt then hand tighten the bolt.
    8.

  27. If the tensioner was extended and the belt cannot be installed, perform the steps above for the new belt installation.
    1. Install the belt over the pulleys in this sequence; drive pulley, idler pulley, front camshaft pulley, water pump pulley, rear camshaft pulley and adjusting pulley.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the idler pulley bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Remove the battery clamp bolt.
    6.

  29. Install the lower half of the side mount and tighten the 3 long bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm) and the one short bolt to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).

  31. Install the timing belt guide plate as shown in the illustration.
  32.  
  33. Install the lower timing cover and tighten the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  34.  
  35. Install the front and rear upper timing covers and tighten the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  36.  
  37. Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten the bolts to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm), using the holding tool to prevent the crankshaft from rotating.

  39. Rotate the crankshaft pulley about 5 or 6 degrees clockwise so the belt positions itself on the pulleys.

  41. Turn the crankshaft pulley so the white mark aligns with the pointer.

  43. Check the camshaft pulley marks are aligned. If the marks are aligned, proceed to the next step. If the marks are not aligned, remove the timing belt and reinstall using the steps outlined before this step.

  45. Install the drive belt.

  47. Install the upper side mount and tighten the bolts in the sequence illustrated to the specifications in the illustration.

  49. Install the dipstick tube.
  50.  
  51. Using a suitable scan tool, perform the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) reset and the Crankshaft position (CKP) pattern clear/learn procedures, following the scan tool manufactures instructions.
