Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
Disconnecting the negative battery cable on some vehicles may interfere with the functions of the on-board computer systems and may require the computer to undergo a relearning process, once the negative battery cable is reconnected.

    NOTE
If working near and/or around the SRS system and components, be sure to properly disable the SRS system. See disarming/arming the SRS system.

  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  8.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.
  11. Tag and remove spark plug wires and, if necessary, remove air cleaner.
  12.
  13. Disconnect hoses, pipes, and accessory brackets, as required.

To install:

NOTE
Be sure to use new fasteners, as required.

NOTE
Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread sealer are identified. Do not use paints, lubricants or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners.

  1. Clean mating surfaces on manifold and cylinder head.
  2.
  3. Place exhaust manifold and gasket into position on cylinder head.
  4.
  5. Install shields, washers, locks, studs and bolts. Tighten bolts to 25-26 ft. lbs. (34-35 Nm) and studs to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  6.
  7. Connect oxygen sensor electrical connector, if equipped and install oil level indicator tube, if removed.
  8.
  9. Connect any hoses, pipes and accessory brackets which were removed.
  10.
  11. Install air cleaner, if removed, and connect spark plug wires.
  12.
  13. Raise and support vehicle safely.
  14.
  15. Connect crossover pipe to the exhaust manifold and tighten nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  16.
  17. Lower vehicle and connect the negative battery cable.
  18.
  19. Start engine and check for leaks.
  20.
  21. Using the GM diagnostic scan tool or aftermarket equivalent reprogram the necessary systems and components. Be sure to follow the scan tool manufacturer-s directions.
