Removal & Installation

4.2L Engine




NOTE
This procedure requires the use of a Converter Holding Strap tool No. J 21366 to secure the torque converter to the transmission during removal and installation.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transmission fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove the filler tube nut and stud located on the right side of the engine.
  6.  
  7. Raise the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with 2 wheel drive (2WD), remove the rear propeller shaft.
  10.  
  11. If equipped with 4 wheel drive (4WD), remove the transfer case.
  12.  
  13. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  14.  
  15. Remove the fuel tank shield if equipped.
  16.  
  17. Remove the transmission support.
  18.  
  19. Remove the transmission mount bolts and mount.
  20.  
  21. Remove the front exhaust pipe assembly.
  22.  
  23. Lower the transmission for access to the top and sides of the transmission.
  24.  
  25. Remove the range selector cable end from the transmission range selector lever ball stud and bracket.
  26.  
  27. Remove the transmission heat shield, transmission vent hose park/neutral position switch connector, and main connector from the transmission.
  28.  
  29. Remove the bolt that secures the fuel line bracket to the left side of the transmission.
  30.  
  31. Remove the flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. Be careful not to drop the bolts into the bell housing.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines from the transmission. Plug the transmission oil cooler lines connectors in the transmission case.
  34.  
  35. Install a safety chain around the transmission.
  36.  
  37. Remove the bolt that secures the fuel line bracket to the bell housing.
  38.  
  39. Remove the bolts that secure the coolant pipe to the bell housing.
  40.  
  41. Remove the remaining nuts, studs and/or bolts that secure the transmission to the engine.
  42.  
  43. Install Converter Holding Strap tool No. J 21366 onto the transmission bell housing to hold the torque converter.
  44.  
  45. Pull the transmission straight back and remove it from the vehicle.
  46.  

To install:

Installation is the reverse of removal, but please note the following important steps.

  1. Make sure the torque converter is fully seated in the pump drive. If not, the transmission will not fit tightly to the rear of the engine block.
  2.  
  3. Raise the transmission into position and remove the torque converter holding strap. Carefully slide the transmission forward until the dowel pins are engaged while lining up the marks on the flywheel made during removal.
  4.  
  5. The torque converter should be flush with the flywheel and turn freely by hand.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (66 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the transmission-to-engine nuts, studs and or bolts. Tighten the studs and/or bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Tighten the bolts securing the heat shield to the transmission to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Tighten the bolts and washers securing the transmission mount to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Tighten the nut and washer securing the transmission mount to the transmission support to 35 ft. lbs. (46 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Refill the transmission with the proper amount and type of fluid.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the vehicle and allow to warm while checking for leaks. Road test the vehicle to check for shift quality.
  20.  

4.3L Engines



2000-01 Vehicles
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Drain the transmission fluid.

    Driveshaft from the transmission (2WD) and transfer case, if equipped (4WD)
     

  6.  
  7. Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack.

    Shift cable from the transmission control lever and bracket
     
    Nut and washer securing the transmission mount to the crossmember
     
    Bolts and washers securing the mount to the transmission
     
    Exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold(s)
     
    Bolts securing the converter pan cover to the transmission, if equipped
     
    3 bolts securing the torque converter to the flywheel
     
    Bolt, clip, and strap securing the three fuel lines and transmission vent hose to the transmission case
     
    Bolts and nut securing the transmission to the engine
     
    Oil filler tube and seal from the transmission
     
    Transmission cooler lines from the transmission. Plug the lines and the ports in the transmission.
     
    Wiring harness connectors from the transmission

  9. Inspect for any other wiring, brackets etc. which may interfere with the removal of the transmission.
  10.  
  11. Since the transmission acts as a rear engine mount, properly support the rear of the engine with an underbody support or other suitable support before attempting to remove the transmission. Otherwise the rear of the engine may pitch downward and components on the rear of the engine and on the firewall may be damaged.
  12.  
  13. Remove the transmission from the engine by pulling the transmission rearward to disengage it from the locator dowel pins on the back of the block. Carefully lower the transmission from the vehicle. Use care that the torque converter does not fall out of the front of the transmission.
    NOTE
    Use converter holding strap tool No. J-21366, to secure the torque converter to the transmission during removal and installation procedures.

To install:

Installation is the reverse of removal, but please note the following important steps.

  1. Make sure the torque converter is fully seated in the pump drive. If not, the transmission will not fit tightly to the rear of the engine block.
  2.  
  3. Raise the transmission into position and remove the torque converter holding strap. Carefully slide the transmission forward until the dowel pins are engaged.
  4.  
  5. The torque converter should be flush with the flywheel and turn freely by hand.
  6.  
  7. Install the transmission-to-engine bolts. Tighten the bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Tighten the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm).
  10.  
  11. If equipped, tighten the converter pan cover to the transmission bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
  12.  
  13. Tighten the bolts and washers securing the transmission mount to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Tighten the nut and washer securing the transmission mount to the crossmember to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Refill the transmission with the proper amount and type of fluid.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the vehicle and allow to warm while checking for leaks. Road test the vehicle to check for shift quality.

2002-04 Vehicles

NOTE
This procedure requires the use of a Converter Holding Strap tool No. J 21366 to secure the torque converter to the transmission during removal and installation.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative, then the positive battery cables
     
    Fill tube nut, located on the right side of the engine
     

  4.  
  5. Drain the transmission fluid.

    Rear propeller shaft
     

  6.  
  7. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.

    Nuts securing the transmission mount to the transmission support
     
    Evaporative emission (EVAP) canister from its mounting bracket on the left inside of the frame to get access to the transmission support bolts. Do not disconnect the canister lines.
     
    Fuel tank shield
     
    Transmission support
     
    Transmission mount bolts and mount
     
    Front exhaust pipe assembly

  9. Lower the transmission for access to the top and sides of the transmission.

    Transfer case, if equipped
     
    Range selector cable end from the transmission range selector lever ball stud and bracket
     
    Transmission heat shield, transmission vent hose park/neutral position switch connector, and main connector from the transmission
     
    Bolt that secures the fuel line bracket to the left side of the transmission
     
    Torque converter access plug

  11. Matchmark the flywheel and torque converter orientation for reassembly.

    Flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. Be careful not to drop the bolts into the bell housing!
     
    Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines from the transmission. Plug the transmission oil cooler lines connectors in the transmission case.

  13. Install a safety chain around the transmission.

    Bolt that secures the fuel line bracket to the bell housing
     
    Bolts that secure the coolant pipe to the bell housing
     
    Remaining nuts, studs and/or bolts that secure the transmission to the engine

  15. Install Converter Holding Strap tool No. J 21366 onto the transmission bell housing to hold the torque converter.
  16.

  13. Tighten the nut and washer securing the transmission mount to the transmission support to 35 ft. lbs. (46 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Refill the transmission with the proper amount and type of fluid.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the vehicle and allow to warm while checking for leaks. Road test the vehicle to check for shift quality.
  18.  

5.3L Engine




NOTE
This procedure requires the use of a Converter Holding Strap tool No. J 21366 to secure the torque converter to the transmission during removal and installation.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transmission fluid.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear propeller shaft.
  8.  
  9. Support the transmission with a jack.
  10.  
  11. Remove the nuts securing the transmission mount to the transmission support.
  12.  
  13. Remove the transmission support from the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the transmission mount.
  16.  
  17. Remove the front exhaust pipe assembly.
  18.  
  19. Lower the transmission to gain access to the top and sides of the transmission.
  20.  
  21. Remove the transfer case, if equipped.
  22.  
  23. Remove the range selector cable end from the transmission range selector lever ball stud and the bracket.
  24.  
  25. Remove the transmission heat shield.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the transmission vent hose, the park/neutral position switch connectors, and the main electrical connector from the transmission.
  28.  
  29. Remove the transmission harness from the retainers.
  30.  
  31. Remove the bolt that secures the fuel line bracket to the left side of the transmission.
  32.  
  33. Remove the torque converter access plug.
  34.  
  35. Mark the flywheel and torque converter orientation for reassembly.
  36.  
  37. Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts. Use care not to drop the bolts into the bell housing.
  38.  
  39. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines from the transmission.
  40.  
  41. Plug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
  42.  
  43. Install a safety chain around the transmission.
  44.  
  45. Remove the nut that secures the filler tube to the bell housing.
  46.  
  47. Remove the transmission filler tube.
  48.  
  49. Remove the remaining nuts, studs and/or bolts that secure the transmission to the engine.
  50.  
  51. Install the J-21366 onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
  52.  
  53. Pull the transmission straight back.
  54.  
  55. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
  56.  

To install:

  1. Raise the transmission into place and remove the torque converter holding tool.
  2.  
  3. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter made during removal. The torque converter must be flush onto the flywheel and rotate freely by hand.
  4.  
  5. Install nuts, studs and/or bolts securing the transmission to the engine and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the fuel line retaining bracket to the transmission.
  8.  
  9. Install the flywheel-to-torque converter bolts and tighten to 44 ft. lbs. (66 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the torque converter access plug.
  12.  
  13. Remove the safety chain from the transmission.
  14.  
  15. Install the transmission filler tube.
  16.  
  17. Install the filler tube nut.
  18.  
  19. Install the transmission vent hose, fuel lines, and the wiring harness to the transmission.
  20.  
  21. Install the transmission harness to the retainers.
  22.  
  23. Install the heat shield to the transmission.
  24.  
  25. Install the bolts securing the heat shield to the transmission and tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install the shift cable end to the transmission shift lever ball stud and bracket.
  28.  
  29. Install the transfer case, if equipped.
  30.  
  31. Install the front exhaust pipe assembly.
  32.  
  33. Install the transmission mount to the vehicle.
  34.  
  35. Install the bolts securing the transmission mount to the transmission and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  36.  
  37. Install the transmission support to the vehicle.
  38.  
  39. Lower the transmission and remove the transmission jack.
  40.  
  41. Install the nuts securing the transmission mount to the transmission support and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (46 Nm).
  42.  
  43. Install the rear propeller shaft.
  44.  
  45. Flush the transmission oil cooler and cooling lines at this time, if necessary.
  46.  
  47. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines to the transmission.
  48.  
  49. Lower the vehicle.
  50.  
  51. Connect the battery cable.
  52.  
  53. Fill the transmission to the proper level with DEXRON® III transmission fluid and check for leaks.
  54.  
  55. Road test the vehicle and check for proper operation.
