Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor

2.2L (Ln2) & 2.4L Engines

The camshaft position (CMP) sensor signal is a digital ON/OFF pulse, output once per revolution of the camshaft. The CMP sensor does not directly affect the operation of the ignition system. The CMP sensor information is used by the powertrain control module (PCM) to determine the position of the valve train relative to the crankshaft. By monitoring the CMP and CKP signals the PCM can accurately time the operation of the fuel injectors. The CMP sensor is connected to the PCM by a 12-volt, low reference, and signal circuit.

Removal & Installation



2.2L (Ln2)
  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet resonator.
  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the CMP sensor retaining bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the CMP sensor.
  8.  
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Tighten the CMP sensor bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

2.4L Engine
  1. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
  2.  
  3. Remove the CMP sensor fastener (2).
  4.  
  5. Remove the CMP sensor (1) from the camshaft housing (3).
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten the CMP sensor bolt to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  8.  

3.1L And 3.4L
  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2.  
  3. Remove the serpentine drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the power steering pump, if required.
  8.  
  9. Remove the attaching bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the sensor.
  12.  
  13. Inspect the sensor for wear, cracks or leakage if the sensor is not being replaced.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the O-ring with clean engine oil and replace if damaged.
  2.  
  3. Install the camshaft Position Sensor.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the retaining bolt to 8 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the sensor electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Install the power steering pump, if removed.
  10.  
  11. Reinstall the serpentine drive belt.
  12.  

3.5L
  1. Remove the mounting nuts retaining the coolant recovery tank.
  2.  
  3. Lift the coolant recovery tank to gain access to the camshaft position (CMP) sensor.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector from the CMP sensor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the CMP sensor mounting bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the CMP sensor from the cylinder head.
  10.  
  11. Remove the sensor by pulling on the sensor connector. Do not pry on the bracket.
  12.  
  13. Do not rotate or twist the sensor or damage the mounting bracket if the sensor is being reused.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install and fully seat the CMP sensor into the cylinder head.
  2.  
  3. Install the CMP sensor mounting bolt. Tighten the bolt to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the electrical connector to the CMP sensor.
  6.  
  7. Lower the coolant recovery tank onto the mounting studs.
  8.  
  9. Install the 2 mounting nuts to retain the coolant recovery tank. Tighten the nuts.
  10.  

3.8L-2000-02
  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the camshaft position sensor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the camshaft position sensor retaining screw.
  6.  
  7. Remove the camshaft position (CMP) sensor from the engine front cover.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the camshaft position sensor to the engine front cover.
  2.  
  3. Reinstall the camshaft position sensor retaining bolt.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the bolt to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the camshaft position sensor electrical connector.
  8.  

3.8L-2003-05
  1. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir
  2.  
  3. Remove the drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector from the camshaft position sensor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the camshaft position sensor bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the camshaft position sensor from the engine front cover.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the camshaft position sensor to the engine front cover.
  2.  
  3. Install the camshaft position sensor bolt.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the electrical connector to the camshaft position sensor. 
  8.  
  9. Install the drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Install the coolant recovery reservoir.
  12.
