Removal & Installation



4.2L Engine
  1. Remove the intake manifold, as outlined in this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the A/C line at the oil level indicator tube bracket nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the A/C bracket bolt from the engine lift hook.
  6.  
  7. Position the A/C line out of the way.
  8.  
  9. Remove the engine lift bracket.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the ignition control module electrical connectors.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the ignition control module bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ignition control module.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the engine electrical harness housing from the camshaft cover (1) taking care not to damage the clips that hold the housing in place.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the fuel injection harness electrical connector.
  20.  
  21. Loosen and remove the camshaft cover bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the camshaft cover.
  24.  
  25. Clean and inspect the camshaft cover.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Install a new camshaft cover seal.
  2.  
  3. Install new rubber ignition control module seals.
  4.  
  5. Install the camshaft cover and secure with the cam cover bolts. Tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the ignition control modules and secure the modules with bolts. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the ignition control module electrical connectors.
  10.  
  11. Install the fuel injector electrical connectors.
  12.  
  13. Install the engine electrical harness housing.
  14.  
  15. Install the A/C line bracket to the oil level indicator tube stud and secure the bracket with the nut. Tighten the A/C line bracket nut to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the engine lift bracket and secure the lift hook with the bolts. Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the A/C line bracket to the engine lift bracket and secure the A/C bracket with the bolt. Tighten the A/C bracket bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the intake manifold.
  22.  

4.3L Engines
Left Side
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and disconnect the air duct from the inlet.
  2.  
  3. Remove the PCV valve and pipe assembly.
  4.  
  5. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  6.  
  7. Unplug the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connection.
  8.  
  9. Partially drain the coolant, then disconnect the radiator inlet hose from the thermostat housing outlet.
  10.  
  11. Remove the EGR valve inlet pipe from the exhaust and intake manifolds.
  12.  
  13. Unfasten the rocker arm cover bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rocker arm cover and gasket.
  16.  
  17. Using a putty knife, carefully clean the gasket mounting surfaces. Keep debris out of the engine.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install the rocker arm cover to the engine using a new gasket.
  2.  
  3. Install new bolt grommets, then tighten the retainers to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm). Be careful not to overtighten the fasteners and either distort the valve cover (causing and leak) or break the fastener (causing more work).
  4.  
  5. Attach the EGR valve inlet pipe from the exhaust and intake manifolds. Tighten the pipe-to-intake manifold nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm), the pipe-to-exhaust manifold nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) and the pipe clamp bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the radiator inlet hose to the thermostat housing outlet and fill the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Attach the ECT sensor electrical connection.
  10.  
  11. Connect the spark plug wires.
  12.  
  13. Install the PCV valve and pipe assembly.
  14.  
  15. Engage the air duct to the inlet and connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  

Right Side
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the PCV tube from the valve cover and air inlet duct.
  4.  
  5. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires from the plugs.
  6.  
  7. Remove the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the heater hose retainer above the valve cover.
  10.  
  11. Move the heater hoses to one side and wire them aside so that they stay there.
  12.  
  13. Unfasten the bolt attaching the engine wiring harness bracket to the alternator.
  14.  
  15. Unplug the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connection, then move the wiring harness aside.
  16.  
  17. Unfasten the rocker arm cover bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the rocker arm cover and gasket.
  20.  
  21. Using a putty knife, carefully clean the gasket mounting surfaces. Keep debris out of the engine.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Install the rocker arm cover to the engine using a new gasket.
  2.  
  3. Install new bolt grommets, then tighten the retainers to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm). Be careful not to overtighten the fasteners and either distort the valve cover (causing and leak) or break the fastener (causing more work).
  4.  
  5. Place the wiring harness into position, then attach CKP sensor electrical connection.
  6.  
  7. Place the heater hoses into position and fasten the heater hose retainer.
  8.  
  9. Attach the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve.
  10.  
  11. Connect the spark plug wires.
  12.  
  13. Install the PCV tube.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  

5.3L Engine
Left Side
  1. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) lock.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the main electrical connector (5) to the ignition coil wire harness.
  4.  
  5. Remove the harness clips.
  6.  
  7. Reposition the engine harness, if necessary.
  8.  
  9. Remove the spark plug wires from the ignition coils. Twist each plug wire 1 / 2 turn and pull only on the boot in order to remove the wire from the ignition coil.
  10.  
  11. If necessary, remove the ignition coil bracket studs from the rocker arm cover.
  12.  
  13. If necessary, remove the ignition coils and bracket from the rocker arm cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose from the rocker arm cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the valve rocker arm cover.
  20.  
  21. Remove the gasket from the rocker cover. Discard the OLD gasket.
  22.  

To install:


NOTE
Important:



All gasket surfaces should be free of oil an/or other foreign material during assembly.
 
DO NOT reuse the valve rocker arm cover gasket.
 
The valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets may be reused.
 
If the PCV valve grommet has been removed from the rocker cover, install a NEW grommet during assembly.
 

  1. Install a NEW rocker cover gasket (1) into the groove of the valve rocker arm cover.
  2.  
  3. Install the valve rocker arm cover onto the cylinder head.
  4.  
  5. Install new rocker arm cover grommets, if necessary.
  6.  
  7. Install the rocker arm cover bolts and tighten to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the PCV hose to the rocker arm cover.
  10.  
  11. Apply threadlock GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the threads of the bracket bolts.
  12.  
  13. If necessary, install the ignition coils and bracket to the rocker arm cover.
  14.  
  15. If necessary, install the ignition coil bracket studs to the rocker arm cover. Tighten the studs to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the spark plug wires to the ignition coils.
  18.  
  19. Position the engine harness, if necessary.
  20.  
  21. Install the harness clips.
  22.  
  23. Connect the main electrical connector to the ignition coil wire harness.
  24.  
  25. Install the CPA lock.
  26.
