Fuel Pressure Regulator

Removal & Installation



4.2L Engine
  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner outlet resonator.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the retaining clips at the front of the engine.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
  8.  
  9. Clean any dirt from the fuel pressure regulator and the surrounding area.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the fuel return pipe.
  12.  
  13. Remove the fuel return pipe retainer.
  14.  
  15. Remove the fuel pressure regulator retainer.
  16.  
  17. Remove the fuel pressure regulator.
  18.  
  19. Inspect the regulator filter screen for contamination. If contaminated, replace the fuel pressure regulator.

To install:

  1. Install the regulator filter.
  2.  
  3. Install the new O-ring on the fuel pressure regulator.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate the fuel pressure regulator O-ring with clean engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Push the fuel pressure regulator into the regulator housing on the fuel rail.
  8.  
  9. Install the fuel pressure regulator retainer. Tighten the regulator retainer screw to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the fuel return pipe retainer. Tighten the return pipe retainer screw to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the fuel return pipe.
  14.  
  15. Connect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Inspect for leaks:
    1. Turn ON the ignition for 2 seconds.
    2.  
    3. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
    4.  
    5. Turn ON the ignition.
    6.  
    7. Inspect for fuel leaks.
    8.

  21. Install the engine wiring harness into the retaining clips at the front of the engine.
  22.  
  23. Install the air intake resonator.
  24.  

4.3L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to the fuel system relief procedure in this section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper intake manifold assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the fuel pressure regulator vacuum tube.
  8.  
  9. Disassemble the fuel pressure regulator snapring retainer.
  10.  
  11. Remove the fuel pressure regulator assembly and the O-rings. Discard the O-rings, filter and back-up O-rings.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the O-rings with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the back-up O-ring, the large O-ring, the filter and the small O-ring.
  4.  
  5. Install the fuel pressure regulator with the vacuum tube facing down into the snapring retainer and attach the vacuum tube.
  6.  
  7. Install the snapring retainer.
  8.  
  9. Install the upper manifold assembly.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

5.3L Engine
  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
  4.  
  5. Clean any dirt from the fuel pressure regulator retainer and the surrounding area.
  6.  
  7. Remove the fuel pressure regulator retainer.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fuel pressure regulator (9).
  10.  
  11. Ensure none of the following parts are still in the fuel rail:
    1. Backup ring
    2.  
    3. Regulator seal O-ring
    4.  
    5. Regulator filter
    6.  
    7. Regulator seal O-ring
    8.  

  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the following parts onto the fuel pressure regulator, if necessary:
    1. Backup ring
    2.  
    3. Regulator seal O-ring
    4.  
    5. Regulator filter
    6.  
    7. Regulator seal O-ring
    8.  

  2.  
  3. Lubricate the fuel pressure regulator large O-rings with clean engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Install the fuel pressure regulator.
  6.  
  7. Install a NEW fuel pressure regulator retainer.
  8.  
  9. Connect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Install the fuel fill cap.
  14.  
  15. Inspect for leaks:
    1. Turn ON the ignition for 2 seconds.
    2.  
    3. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
    4.  
    5. Turn ON the ignition.
    6.  
    7. Inspect for fuel leaks.
    8.  

  16.  
  17. Install the engine wiring harness into the retaining clips at the front of the engine.
  18.  
  19. Install the air intake resonator.
  20.
