Parking Brake Shoes

Adjustments



With Rear Disc Brakes
  1. Raise and support the rear of the vehicle safely using jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the caliper and rotor.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.
  8.  
  9. Adjust the shoe diameter using the adjuster nut. Turn the nut clockwise to increase the diameter until the rear wheel will not rotate forward without using excessive force. For location of the nut as refer to the accompanying illustration.

  11. Attach the parking brake cable to the lever.

  13. Install the caliper and the rotor.
  14.  
  15. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  16.  
  17. Adjust the rear parking brake cables as outlined earlier in this section.

  19. Lower the vehicle and check for proper operation.

Removal & Installation



With Rear Disc Brakes
  1. Raise and support the rear of the vehicle safely using jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the caliper and rotor.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.
  8.  
  9. Remove the parking brake shoes assembly by sliding the shoe towards the hold-down spring until the shoe is disconnected from the spring.
  10.  
  11. Remove the shoe from the actuation mechanism.
  12.  
  13. Clean all dirt, debris and dust from the parking brake assembly components using a clean rag.
  14.  
  15. Turn the adjustment screw to the fully home position in the notched adjustment nut, then back it off 1 / 4 of a turn.
  16.  
  17. Align the slots in both the adjusting screw and the tappet to be parallel with the backing plate face.

To install:

  1. Install a new parking brake shoe.
  2.  
  3. Position the shoe on the inboard side of the actuation mechanism.
  4.  
  5. Clip the shoe onto the hold-down spring. Make sure the shoe is central on the backing plate and has both tips located in the slots.
  6.  
  7. Manually check the parking brake for proper operation.
  8.  
  9. Attach the parking brake cable to the lever.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the parking brake shoe as outlined later in this section.
  12.  
  13. Install the caliper and the rotor.
  14.  
  15. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle and check for proper operation.

With Rear Drum Brakes

The rear drum brake shoes serve as the parking brakes. Refer to the procedures under Rear Drum Brakes.
