Removal & Installation



4.3L Engine
2wd Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Wires from the starter solenoid
     
    Starter motor mounting bolts
     
    Starter motor and if equipped, the shims

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Starter motor into position
     
    Starter motor inboard bolt but do not tighten it at this time
     
    Starter motor shims, if equipped
     
    Outboard starter motor bolt. Tighten the bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
     
    Wires to the solenoid
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

4wd Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Brush end mounting bracket, if removed
     
    Wiring from the starter solenoid
     
    Transfer case shield, if equipped
     
    Bolts that attach the brake pipe-to-transmission bracket to the transmission crossmember and the brackets
     
    Transmission crossmember bolts, (usually three on each side)
     
    Transmission mount bolts. Support the transmission assembly with a transmission jack and slide the transmission crossmember out of the way.
     
    Bracket that attaches the transmission cooler lines to the flywheel housing, brace rod to the flywheel housing, and/or the lower flywheel housing as necessary
     
    Starter motor mounting bolts
     
    Starter and if equipped, the starter shims
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Shims in their original locations (if equipped), then place the starter motor into position
     
    Starter motor bolts and tighten them to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
     
    Lower flywheel cover, if removed
     
    Transmission line bracket to the housing and the brace rod to the housing, if equipped
     
    Crossmember and tighten the retaining bolts
     
    Transfer case shield, if equipped
     
    Solenoid wiring
     
    Brush end bracket and tighten the nuts to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm), if equipped
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Start the vehicle to check for proper operation.
  4.  

4.6L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the left front tire and wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Working in the left fender area, disconnect the positive battery lead from the solenoid.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Starter mount bolt and nut
     
    Starter motor

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Starter motor
     
    Starter mounting bolt and nut. Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Positive battery cable to the starter. Tighten the nut to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
     
    Left front tire and wheel assembly

  3. Carefully lower the vehicle, then connect the negative battery cable.
  4.  

5.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Catalytic converter
     
    Engine shield bolts and shield
     
    Right transmission cover bolt
     
    Starter bolts
     
    Transmission cover and shield, after repositioning the starter
     

  4.  
  5. Position the starter down, with the terminals facing toward the front of the vehicle.

    Starter solenoid nut
     
    Starter lead from the solenoid stud
     
    Starter lead nut
     
    Positive cable from the starter stud
     
    Starter

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Starter in the vehicle. Position the starter down , with the terminals facing toward the front of the vehicle.
     
    Positive cable to the starter stud.
     
    Starter lead nut and tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
     
    Starter solenoid lead to the stud
     
    Starter solenoid nut and tighten to 30 inch lbs. (3.4 Nm)
     
    Install the shield and transmission cover, after repositioning the starter
     

  2.  
  3. Slide the starter rearward.

    Starter bolts and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Right transmission cover bolt and tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
     
    Catalytic converter
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle to check for proper operation.
  6.
