Power Steering Pump

Bleeding

NOTE
Make sure to u se clean, new power steering fluid type only. Hoses touching the frame, body or engine may cause system noise. Verify that the hoses do not touch any other part of the vehicle. Loose connections may not leak, but could allow air into the steering system. Verify that all hose connections are tight.

WARNING
Power steering fluid level must be maintained throughout bleed procedure.

  1. Fill pump reservoir with fluid to minimum system level, FULL COLD level, or middle of hash mark on cap stick fluid level indicator.
    NOTE
With hydro-boost only, the oil level will appear falsely high if the hydro-boost accumulator is not fully charged. Do not apply the brake pedal with the engine OFF. This will discharge the hydro-boost accumulator.

  2.
  3. If equipped with hydro-boost, fully charge the hydro-boost accumulator using the following procedure:
    1. Start the engine.
    2.
    3. Firmly apply the brake pedal 10-15 times.
    4.
    5. Turn the engine OFF.
    6.

  4.
  5. Raise the vehicle until the front wheels are off the ground.
  6.
  7. Key on engine OFF, turn the steering wheel from stop to stop 12 times. Vehicles equipped with hydro-boost systems or longer length power steering hoses may require turns up to 15 to 20 stop to stops.
  8.
  9. Verify power steering fluid level per operating specification.
  10.
  11. Start the engine. Rotate steering wheel from left to right. Check for sign of cavitation or fluid aeration (pump noise/whining).
  12.
  13. Verify the fluid level. Repeat the bleed procedure, if necessary.
  14.

  2.
  3. Install the power steering pump.
  4.
  5. Install the power steering pump mounting bolts. Tighten the power steering pump mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.
  7. Install the power steering cooler hose to the power steering pump.
  8.
  9. Install the power steering pressure hose to the power steering pump. Tighten the power steering pressure hose to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  10.
  11. Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle.
  12.
  13. Install the drive belt.
  14.
  15. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  16.
  17. Bleed the power steering system.
  18.
  19. Inspect the power steering system for leaks and the hoses for clearance away from the frame and other components.
  20.

4.3L Engine
  1. Position a fluid catch pan under the power steering pump.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the feed and return hoses from the power steering pump, then drain the excess fluid into the catch pan.
    NOTE
On models equipped with a remote fluid reservoir, disconnect and plug the hose(s) in order to prevent system contamination or excessive fluid loss.

  4.
  5. Remove the drive belt from the pulley.
  6.
  7. Install a puller tool such as J-25034, or equivalent onto the power steering pump pulley. While holding the pilot bolt, turn the tool nut counterclockwise in order to press the drive pulley from the pump.
    NOTE
When installing the puller tool onto the power steering pump pulley, be sure that the pilot bolt bottoms in the pump shaft by turning the head of the pilot bolt.

  9. On most models, it may be necessary to unplug the electrical connection from the A/C compressor, unfasten the compressor mounting bolts and set the compressor to one side without disconnecting the lines.
  10.
  11. If equipped, unfasten the power steering filler tube bolt and remove the filler tube.
  12.
  13. Remove the rear brace retainers and the brace.
  14.
  15. Remove the power steering pump-to-bracket bolts and then remove the pump from the vehicle.
  16.

To install:

  1. Position the pump to the vehicle and secure using the front retaining bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  2.
  3. If equipped, install the rear brace and tighten the retainers to 31 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  4.
  5. If removed, install the A/C compressor.
  6.
  7. If removed, install the filler tube and its retainer. Tighten the retainer to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
