Steering Wheel

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disable the SIR (airbag) system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the inflator module.
  6.  
  7. Remove the horn plunger from the steering column by pressing inward to the stop and rotating the horn plunger 90 degrees.
  8.  
  9. On vehicles with redundant steering wheel controls, disconnect the steering wheel electrical connector.
  10.  
  11. Remove the nut that retains the steering wheel to the steering shaft.
  12.  
  13. Mark the steering wheel to the steering shaft. This will ensure proper alignment during installation.
    WARNING
    When removing the steering wheel, use only the specified steering wheel puller. Do not hammer on the end of the steering column shaft. Hammering could loosen the plastic injections which maintain the steering column rigidity.

  15. Install steering wheel puller tool J 1859-A to the steering wheel.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering wheel using J 1859-A.
  18.  
  19. Remove the J 1859-A from the steering wheel.

To install:

  1. Align the mark on the steering wheel and the steering shaft. Ensure that the turn signal on the multifunction switch is in the neutral position when installing the steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Install the steering wheel to the steering shaft.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering wheel retaining nut to the steering shaft and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  6.  
  7. On vehicles with redundant steering wheel controls, connect the steering wheel electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Install the horn plunger to the steering column.
  10.  
  11. Install the inflator module.
  12.  
  13. Enable the SIR system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.
