Crankshaft Damper (Balancer)

Removal & Installation



2.2L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drive belt.
  4.  
  5. If necessary, remove the fan shroud.
  6.  
  7. If necessary, remove the engine cooling fan.
  8.  
  9. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  10.  
  11. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the hub bolt and washer from the crankshaft pulley.
  14.  
  15. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  16.  
  17. Position the pulley hub puller tool onto the crankshaft hub.
  18.  
  19. Turn the center puller screw clockwise in order to remove the hub from the crankshaft.
  20.  
  21. Inspect the crankshaft hub for damage. Replace if necessary.
  22.  
  23. Remove the key from the crankshaft.
  24.  
  25. Inspect the crankshaft key for damage. Replace if necessary.

To install:

  1. Coat the engine front cover seal contact area with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Apply RTV sealer GM P/N 1052917 to the keyway on the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install the key into the keyway on the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Install the pulley hub into position over the key on the crankshaft.
  8.  
  9. Install the pulley hub installer tool through the hub and into the crankshaft so that at least 6 mm (0.24 in) of threads are engaged.
  10.  
  11. Pull the crankshaft pulley hub into position against the pulley hub installer tool.
  12.  
  13. Remove the pulley hub installer tool from the crankshaft.
  14.  
  15. Make sure that the hub is seated against the crankshaft.
  16.  
  17. Position the crankshaft pulley over the crankshaft pulley hub.
  18.  
  19. Install the crankshaft pulley bolts and the hub bolt and washer. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Tighten the crankshaft pulley to hub bolt to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Install the engine cooling fan.
  26.  
  27. Install the fan shroud.
  28.  
  29. Install the drive belt.
  30.  
  31. Connect the negative battery cable.
  32.  

4.3L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fan shroud assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt and washer.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts and the crankshaft pulley.
  10.  
  11. Use the balancer remover and installer tool in order to remove the crankshaft balancer.
  12.  
  13. Note the position and length of any front groove pins (crankshaft balancer) (if applicable).
  14.  
  15. Clean the crankshaft balancer in cleaning solvent.
  16.  
  17. Dry the crankshaft balancer with compressed air.
  18.  
  19. Inspect the crankshaft balancer for the following:

    Loose or improperly installed front groove pin (crankshaft balancer). A properly installed front groove pin should be installed until flush or below flush with the face of the crankshaft balancer.
     
    Worn, grooved, or damaged crankshaft front oil sealing surface. Minor imperfections on the crankshaft balancer crankshaft front oil seal surface may be removed with a polishing compound or fine grade emery cloth.
     
    Worn, chunking, or deteriorated rubber between the hub and the outer ring
     
    Worn or damaged keyway
     
    Worn or damaged bolt hole threads

To install:

  1. Apply a small amount of grease to the crankshaft front cover oil seal sealing surface if reusing the seal. Look to ensure that the front groove pin (crankshaft balancer) is installed in the proper location (if applicable). The length and location of the pins must be the same as the original length and location.

  3. Apply a small amount of adhesive GM P/N 12346141 (Canadian P/N 10953433) or equivalent onto the crankshaft balancer keyway in order to seal the crankshaft balancer keyway and crankshaft joint.
  4.  
  5. Align the keyway of the crankshaft balancer with the crankshaft balancer key.
  6.  
  7. Install the crankshaft balancer onto the end of the crankshaft.
  8.  
  9. Use the balancer remover and installer tool in order to press the crankshaft balancer onto the crankshaft clockwise until the crankshaft balancer hub is completely seated against the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring.
  10.  
  11. Remove the balancer remover and installer tool.
  12.  
  13. Install the crankshaft pulley and bolts and tighten to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Ensure that the crown of the crankshaft balancer washer (2) is faced away from the engine.
  16.  
  17. Install the crankshaft balancer washer and the bolt and tighten to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the drive belt.
  20.  
  21. Install the fan shroud assembly.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24.
