Oil Pressure Sensor

Removal & Installation



2.2L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right fender wheelhouse extension.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Using an oil pressure switch socket, remove the oil pressure sensor.

To install:

  1. Install the oil pressure sensor using the oil pressure switch socket and tighten to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Install the right fender wheelhouse extension.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

4.3L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the distributor.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Hold the oil pressure sensor fitting with a wrench.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pressure sensor using an oil pressure switch socket. Note the alignment of the oil pressure sensor fitting prior to removal.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pressure sensor fitting, if necessary.

To install:

  1. Install the oil pressure sensor fitting, if removed, and tighten to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm). Do not loosen the sensor fitting. Tighten the sensor fitting until it properly aligns. Do not tighten the sensor fitting more than one turn to align.

  3. Install the oil pressure sensor.
  4.  
  5. Hold the oil pressure sensor fitting with a wrench to prevent from turning and using the oil pressure switch socket, tighten the oil pressure sensor to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Install the distributor.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

Testing




WARNING
This test is for testing the sensor only. Verify that the engine has sufficient oil pressure before conducting this test.

  1. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
  2.  
  3. Connect one lead of an ohmmeter to the sensor terminal and the other lead to the sensor body.
  4.  
  5. With the engine off, the resistance should be approximately 1 ohm.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine. The resistance should increase as the engine speed increases.
  8.  
  9. If not, replace the sensor.
  10.
