Coil Springs

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Shock absorber lower bolts
     

  4.  
  5. Push the shock absorber through the control arm and into the spring.
  6.  
  7. With the vehicle supported so the control arms hang free, install Coil Spring Remover and Installer tool J-23028, or equivalent onto a support and into the lower control arm bushings.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Stabilizer bar from the control arm
     
    Stabilizer from the lower control arm
     

  10.  
  11. Raise and remove the tension on the lower control arm bolts.
  12.  
  13. Install a safety chain around the spring and through the lower control arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower control arm pivot bolts, the rear first
     
    Lower control arm and allow it to hang free
     
    Spring assembly

To install:


NOTE
When positioning the spring in the lower control arm, be sure the spring insulator is in the proper position before lifting the control arm in place.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Spring assembly
     
    Lower control arm
     
    Lower control arm pivot bolts
     
    Stabilizer to the lower control arm
     

  2.  

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Stabilizer shaft link from the lower control arm
     
    Shock absorber
     

  2.  
  3. Secure Coil Spring Remover & Installer tool J 23028-01, or equivalent to the end of a suitable jack. Cradle the lower control arms using the tool. Raise the jack to relieve tension on the lower control arm pivot bolts.

  5. Turn the steering wheel to one side, to allow the steering linkage to clear the lower control arm front pivot bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower control arm rear and front pivot bolts and nuts
     

  8.  
  9. Lower tool J 23028-01 slowly to relieve tension from the coil spring.

    Front coil spring and insulators. While removing the coil spring, do not apply any force to the lower control arm and/or ball joint.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Make sure that the coil spring covers all or part of one inspection drain hole. The other hole must be partly or completely uncovered. Rotate the coil spring as necessary.

  2.  
  3. Support the control arm using tool J 23028-01. Position the coil spring and insulator in the upper spring seat on the frame.
  4.  
  5. Raise the lower control arm using tool J 23028-01.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    You must install the bolts in the direction shown to keep proper steering linkage clearance.



    Lower control arm to the frame
     



    Lower control arm front and rear pivot bolts with NEW nuts. With the suspension loaded, torque the front bolt to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm) and the rear bolt to 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm). Remove tool J 23028-01.

    Shock absorber
     
    Stabilizer shaft link to the lower control arm
     

  8.  
  9. Check and adjust the front wheel alignment.
