Axle Assembly

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Support the rear axle housing in order to relieve tension on the leaf springs.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear tires and wheels assemblies.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear brake drums (if equipped).
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake calipers (if equipped).
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear brake rotors (if equipped).
  14.  
  15. Remove the rear brake hose mounting bracket bolt at the axle housing.
  16.  
  17. Remove the rear park brake cables.
  18.  
  19. Remove right rear park brake cable from the cable guide on the rear axle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the rear backing plates.
  22.  
  23. Remove rear axle vibration dampener (if equipped).
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the shock absorbers from the axle brackets.
  26.  
  27. Remove the propeller shaft attached to the rear drive axle. Do not remove propeller shaft from the slip yoke.
  28.  
  29. Secure the propeller shaft out of the way in order not put stress on the universal joints.
  30.  
  31. Remove the rear leaf springs.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the vent hose from the rear axle housing. Do not remove vent hose attached to frame.
  34.  
  35. Lower the axle from the vehicle.
  36.  

To install:

  1. Raise the rear drive axle to a height in order to install the rear leaf springs.
  2.  
  3. Install the rear leaf springs.
  4.  
  5. Connect the vent hose to the axle housing.
  6.  
  7. Line up the previously made marks on the propeller shaft with the marks on the pinion flange.
  8.  
  9. Install the propeller shaft.
  10.  
  11. Install the rear axle damper.
  12.  
  13. Install the rear backing plates.
  14.  
  15. Install the right rear park brake cable in the cable guide on the rear axle.
  16.  
  17. Connect the park brake cables.
  18.  
  19. Install the rear brake drums (if equipped).
  20.  
  21. Install the rear brake rotors (if equipped).
  22.  
  23. Install the brake calipers (if equipped).
  24.  
  25. Install the rear tires and wheels assemblies.
  26.  
  27. Fill the axle with lubricant.
  28.  
  29. Bleed the brakes system.
  30.  
  31. Lower the vehicle.
  32.  
  33. Connect the negative battery cable.
  34.  
  35. Test drive vehicle and check for leaks.
