WARNING
Before beginning this procedure, read the precautions at the beginning of this section. Only a MVAC-trained, EPA-certified, automotive technician should service the A/C system or its components.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Recover the refrigerant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct.
    NOTE
    It is not necessary to completely remove the power steering and A/C compressor drive belt.

  6.  
  7. Disconnect the drive belt from the A/C compressor.
  8.  
  9. Raise and support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the LH front wheel.
  12.  
  13. Remove the LH front splash shield retainers.
  14.  
  15. Remove the LH front splash shield (1).

  17. Remove the discharge line bolt from the A/C compressor.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the discharge line from the A/C compressor.
  20.  
  21. Remove and discard the O-ring.
  22.  
  23. Remove the suction line bolt from the A/C compressor.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the suction line from the A/C compressor.
  26.  
  27. Remove and discard the O-ring.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  30.  
  31. Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolts.
  32.  
  33. Remove the A/C compressor.
  34.  
  35. Replace the desiccant bag if the PAG oil is brown or black, or if there are any contaminants.
    NOTE
    Replacement A/C compressors are charged with PAG oil.

  37. If replacing the A/C compressor, balance the compressor using the following procedure:
    1. Drain the oil from both the suction and discharge ports of the removed compressor into a clean, graduated container. Rotate the compressor shaft to assist in draining the compressor.
    2.  
    3. Measure and record the amount of oil drained from the removed compressor. This measurement will be used during installation of the replacement compressor.
    4.  
    5. Properly discard the used refrigerant oil.
      NOTE
      The Denso replacement compressor is shipped with 74 ml (2.5 oz) of refrigerant.

  39. Before installing the compressor, the refrigerant oil will have to be fully drained.
  40.  
  41. Add back the same quantity of polyalkylene glycol (PAG) oil as drained from the removed compressor.
  42.  

To install:

  1. Install the A/C compressor.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Install the A/C compressor mounting bolts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Install a new O-ring to the discharge line.
  10.  
  11. Connect the discharge line to the A/C compressor.
  12.  
  13. Install the discharge line bolt to the A/C compressor and tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install a new O-ring to the suction line.
  16.  
  17. Connect the suction line to the A/C compressor.
  18.  
  19. Install the suction line bolt to the A/C compressor and tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the LH front splash shield (1).
  22.  
  23. Install the LH front splash shield retainers.
  24.  
  25. Install the LH front wheel.
  26.  
  27. Lower the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Connect the drive belt to the A/C compressor.
  30.  
  31. Install the air cleaner outlet duct.
  32.  
  33. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system.
  34.  
  35. Leak test the fittings of the A/C components.

  23. Remove the suction line bolt from the A/C compressor.

  25. Disconnect the suction line from the A/C compressor.

  27. Remove and discard the O-ring.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  30.  
  31. Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolts.
  32.  
  33. Remove the A/C compressor.
  34.  
  35. Replace the desiccant bag if the PAG oil is brown or black, or if there are any contaminants.
    NOTE
    Replacement A/C compressors are charged with PAG oil.

  21. Install the LH front splash shield (1).

  23. Install the LH front splash shield retainers.
  24.  
  25. Install the LH front wheel.
  26.  
  27. Lower the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Connect the drive belt to the A/C compressor.
  30.  
  31. Install the air cleaner outlet duct.
  32.  
  33. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system.
  34.  
  35. Leak test the fittings of the A/C components.

Heavy Duty Cooling

WARNING

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Recover the refrigerant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct.
  6.  
  7. Remove the drive belt tensioner.
  8.  
  9. Raise and support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the LH front wheel.
  12.  
  13. Remove the LH front splash shield retainers.
  14.  
  15. Remove the LH front splash shield (1).

  17. Remove the front air deflector retainers.
  18.  
  19. Remove the front air deflector.
  20.  
  21. Remove the suction line bolt from the A/C compressor.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the suction line from the A/C compressor.
  24.  
  25. Remove and discard the O-ring.
  26.  
  27. Remove the discharge line bolt from the A/C compressor.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the discharge line from the A/C compressor.
  30.  
  31. Remove and discard the O-ring.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  34.  
  35. Remove the engine oil filter.
  36.  
  37. Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolts.
  38.  
  39. Lower the vehicle.
  40.  
  41. Loosen the fan nut from the crank adapter shaft using J41240-5A .
    NOTE
    Do not attempt to remove the fan from the vehicle. The fan should be gently repositioned aside to allow for adequate clearance during the A/C compressor replacement.

  43. Disconnect the fan from the crank adapter shaft and gently reposition the fan aside.
  44.  
  45. Remove the A/C compressor.
  46.  
  47. Replace the desiccant bag if the PAG oil is brown or black, or if there are any contaminants.
    NOTE
    Replacement A/C compressors are charged with PAG oil. Refer to Refrigerant System Capacities.

  49. If replacing the A/C compressor, balance the compressor using the following procedure:
    1. Drain the oil from both the suction and discharge ports of the removed compressor into a clean, graduated container. Rotate the compressor shaft to assist in draining the compressor.
    2.  
    3. Measure and record the amount of oil drained from the removed compressor. This measurement will be used during installation of the replacement compressor.
    4.  
    5. Properly discard the used refrigerant oil.

  11. Install the engine oil filter.
  12.  
  13. Connect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  14.  
  15. Install a new O-ring to the discharge line.
  16.  
  17. Connect the discharge line to the A/C compressor.
  18.  
  19. Install the discharge line bolt to the A/C compressor tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install a new O-ring to the suction line.
  22.  
  23. Connect the suction line to the A/C compressor.
  24.  
  25. Install the suction line bolt to the A/C compressor tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install the front air deflector.
  28.  
  29. Install the front air deflector retainers.
  30.  
  31. Install the LH front splash shield (1).
  32.  
  33. Install the LH front splash shield retainers.
  34.  
  35. Install the LH front wheel.
  36.  
  37. Lower the vehicle.
  38.  
  39. Install the drive tensioner.
  40.  
  41. Install the air cleaner outlet duct.
  42.  
  43. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system.
  44.  
  45. Leak test the fittings of the A/C components.

Standard Cooling

WARNING

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Recover the refrigerant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct.
  6.  
  7. Remove the drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the cooling fan electrical connectors.
  10.  
  11. Disengage the surge tank inlet hose from the retaining features on the cooling fan shroud and reposition aside.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cooling fan shroud to radiator retaining bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove power steering line to cooling fan shroud retaining bolts.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the A/C line from the cooling fan shroud retainer clip.
  18.  
  19. Raise and support the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the front air deflector retainers.
  22.  
  23. Remove the front air deflector.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the engine frame and reposition.
  26.  
  27. Remove the transmission oil cooler lines to cooling fan shroud retaining bolts.
  28.  
  29. Remove the LH front wheel.
  30.  
  31. Remove the LH front splash shield retainers.
  32.  
  33. Remove the LH front splash shield (1).

  15. Connect the discharge line to the A/C compressor.

  17. Install the discharge line bolt to the A/C compressor and tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install a new O-ring to the suction line. Refer to O-Ring Replacement .
  20.  
  21. Connect the suction line to the A/C compressor.
  22.  
  23. Install the suction line bolt to the A/C compressor and tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the LH front splash shield (1).
  26.  
  27. Install the LH front splash shield retainers.
  28.  
  29. Install the LH front wheel.
  30.  
  31. Install the transmission oil cooler lines to cooling fan shroud retaining bolts and tighten to 58 inch lbs. (6.5 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Connect the engine wiring harness to the engine frame.
  34.  
  35. Install the front air deflector.
  36.  
  37. Install the front air deflector retainers.
  38.  
  39. Lower the vehicle.
  40.  
  41. Connect the A/C line to the cooling fan shroud retainer clip.

  43. Install power steering line to cooling fan shroud retaining bolts tighten to 58 inch lbs. (6.5 Nm).

  45. Install the cooling fan shroud to radiator retaining bolts tighten to 58 inch lbs. (6.5 Nm).
  46.  
  47. Connect the cooling fan electrical connectors.
  48.  
  49. Engage the surge tank inlet hose to the retaining features on the cooling fan shroud.
  50.  
  51. Install the drive belt.
  52.  
  53. Install the air cleaner outlet duct.
  54.  
  55. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system.

  45. Install the cooling fan shroud to radiator retaining bolts tighten to 58 inch lbs. (6.5 Nm).

  47. Connect the cooling fan electrical connectors.
