Camshaft
End Play

After the camshaft has been installed, end-play should be checked. The camshaft sprocket should be installed on the cam. Use a dial gauge to check the end-play, by moving the camshaft forward and backward. Refer to the Camshaft Specifications chart.

Lobe Height

Use a micrometer to check camshaft (lobe) height, making sure the anvil and the spindle of the micrometer are positioned directly on the heel and tip of the camshaft lobe as shown in the accompanying illustration. Refer to the Camshaft Specifications chart.

Runout

Camshaft run-out should be checked when the camshaft has been removed from the engine. An accurate dial indicator is needed for this procedure. If the run-out exceeds the limit replace the camshaft. Refer to the Camshaft Specifications chart.

Removal & Installation



3.6L Engine
Left Side

NOTE
The camshaft position sensors, camshaft position actuators and crankshaft damper are removed in the Front Cover and Timing Chain procedure.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine
     
    Intake manifold assembly
     
    Ignition coil connectors
     
    Wiring harnesses on camshaft cover
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Camshaft cover
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) sensors
     
    Camshaft position actuator solenoid
     
    Crankshaft damper
     

  4.  
  5. Rotate the crankshaft until the camshafts flats are parallel with the camshaft cover rail as shown.
  6.  
  7. Place an open end wrench on the camshaft flats to hold it in place, then loosen the camshaft position actuator bolt.
  8.  
  9. Install holding tool EN-46108 to retain the timing chain in place.
  10.  
  11. Mark the timing chain and camshaft position actuators for reassembly reference.
  12.  
  13. Remove the camshaft position actuator bolt.
  14.  
  15. Note the locations of the camshaft bearing caps for reassembly reference.
  16.  
  17. Remove the camshaft bearing caps.
  18.  
  19. Remove the camshafts.

To install:

  1. Install the camshaft sealing rings in the camshaft grooves.
  2.  
  3. Ensure the camshafts are placed in the correct position by locating the identification numbers on the appropriate camshaft.

  5. Apply engine lubricant to the camshaft journals and carriers and the camshaft bearing caps.
  6.  
  7. Install the camshafts.
  8.  
  9. Ensure the camshafts flats are parallel with the camshaft cover rail as shown.
  10.  
  11. Install thrust cap in the first camshaft journal.
  12.  
  13. Install the camshaft bearing caps in the correct locations so the raised boss is toward the center of the engine.
  14.  
  15. Hand tighten the bearing cap bolts.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the bearing caps bolt in the sequence shown to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Loosen the bolts number 1, 2, 3 and 4, then retighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

  21. Place an open end wrench on the camshaft flats to hold it in place, then tighten the camshaft position actuator bolt to 48 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).

  23. Install or connect the following:

    Crankshaft damper
     
    Camshaft position actuator solenoids
     
    CMP sensors
     
    Camshaft cover with a new gasket
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Wiring harnesses on camshaft cover
     
    Ignition coil connectors
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Engine

  10.  
  11. Mark the timing chain and camshaft position actuators for reassembly reference.
  12.  
  13. Remove the camshaft position actuator bolt.
  14.  
  15. Note the locations of the camshaft bearing caps for reassembly reference.
  16.  
  17. Remove the camshaft bearing caps.
  18.  
  19. Remove the camshafts.

  13. Remove the camshaft position actuator bolt.
  14.  
  15. Note the locations of the camshaft bearing caps for reassembly reference.

  17. Remove the camshaft bearing caps.
  18.  
  19. Remove the camshafts.

  18.  
  19. Remove the camshafts.
