Removal & Installation



4.6L Engine
Left Side

NOTE
The camshaft position actuators and timing chains are removed in the Front Cover and Timing Chain procedure.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Observe the positions of the camshaft bearing caps. The arrow on the cap points toward the front of the engine, the I or E indicates intake or exhaust and the number indicates the journal position from the front of the engine.

    Camshaft cover
     
    Front cover
     
    Timing chains
     
    Camshaft position actuators
     
    Camshaft bearing caps
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the camshafts.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Apply engine lubricant to the camshaft journals and carriers and the camshaft bearing caps.
  2.  
  3. Ensure the camshafts are placed in the correct position by locating the identification letters stamped near the rear journal. For example: L-INT indicates left intake camshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install the camshafts with the camshaft sprocket drive pins at the top of their rotation and the lobes in the neutral position.

  6.  
  7. Install the bearing caps in their correct locations and hand start the bearing cap bolts.
    NOTE
    Ensure each rocker arm is properly aligned with the valve tip, the lifter and the cam lobe.

  8.  
  9. Tighten the bearing cap bolts in sequence to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm), plus an additional 30°.

  11. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft position actuators
     
    Timing chains
     
    Front cover
     
    Camshaft cover
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Wiring harnesses on camshaft cover
     
    Ignition coil connectors
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Engine

Right Side

  5. Remove the camshafts.
  6.  

To install:

  5. Install the right exhaust camshaft with the camshaft sprocket drive pins at the 10 and 60 degree locations and the lobes in the neutral position.
  6.  
  7. Install the right intake camshaft with the camshaft sprocket drive pins at the 25 and 60 degree locations and the lobes in the neutral position.

  9. Install the bearing caps in their correct locations and hand start the bearing cap bolts.
    NOTE

  11. Tighten the bearing cap bolts in sequence to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm), plus an additional 30°.

  7. Install the right intake camshaft with the camshaft sprocket drive pins at the 25 and 60 degree locations and the lobes in the neutral position.

  9. Install the bearing caps in their correct locations and hand start the bearing cap bolts.
    NOTE
    Ensure each rocker arm is properly aligned with the valve tip, the lifter and the cam lobe.

  10.  
  11. Tighten the bearing cap bolts in sequence to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm), plus an additional 30°.
