Camshaft (Cylinder Head) Cover

Removal & Installation



3.6L Engine
Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper intake manifold with the lower intake manifold.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  8.  
  9. Remove the wiring harness from the side of the camshaft cover by sliding the conduit down and outboard.

  11. Remove the wiring conduit retainers from the camshaft cover by rotating the wiring harness conduit retainers counterclockwise.
  12.  
  13. Remove the wiring harness from the front of the camshaft cover.
  14.  
  15. Reposition and secure the wiring harnesses away from the camshaft cover in order to provide clearance.
  16.  
  17. Remove the ignition coils.
  18.  
  19. Remove the spark plugs.
  20.  
  21. Remove the camshaft cover.
  22.  
  23. Remove and discard the camshaft cover seal and grommets.

To install:


NOTE
This procedure requires the use of spark plug tube seal guide, special tool EN46101 or the equivalent.

  1. Install a NEW camshaft cover seal and NEW grommets.
  2.  
  3. Install the camshaft cover using the following procedure:
    1. Install the EN46101 onto the spark plug tubes of the left cylinder head.
    2.  
    3. Install the camshaft cover bolt grommets prior to installing the camshaft cover bolts.

  5. Wipe the camshaft cover sealing surface on the left cylinder head with a clean, lint-free cloth.

  7. Place a bead 0.3150 inch (8mm) in diameter by 0.1575 inch (4mm) in height of RTV sealant, GM P/N 12378521 or equivalent, on the engine front cover split lines (1).
  8.  
  9. Place the left camshaft cover into position onto the left cylinder head.
  10.  
  11. Loosely install the left camshaft cover bolts.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the left camshaft cover bolts in the sequence shown and torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

  15. Remove the EN46101 from the spark plug tubes of the left cylinder head.
  16.  
  17. Install the NEW spark plugs into the left cylinder head and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install each ignition coil through the left camshaft cover into the spark plug tube taking care not to damage the spark plug and/or the seal in the left camshaft cover.
  20.  
  21. Install each ignition coil bolt and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the wiring harness to the front of the camshaft cover.
  24.  
  25. Install the wiring harness conduit retainers to the wiring harness conduit.
  26.  
  27. Install the wiring harness to the side of the camshaft cover.
  28.  
  29. Connect the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  30.  
  31. Install the upper intake manifold with the lower intake manifold.
  32.  
  33. Install the engine cover.
  34.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper intake manifold with the lower intake manifold.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  8.  
  9. Remove the wiring harness from the side of the camshaft cover by sliding the conduit down and outboard.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wiring conduit retainers from the camshaft cover by rotating the wiring harness conduit retainers counterclockwise.
  12.  
  13. Remove the wiring harness from the front of the camshaft cover.
  14.  
  15. Reposition and secure the wiring harnesses away from the camshaft cover in order to provide clearance.
  16.  
  17. Remove the ignition coils.
  18.  
  19. Remove the camshaft cover.
  20.  
  21. Remove and discard the camshaft cover seal and grommets.
  22.  

To install:


NOTE
This procedure requires the use of spark plug tube seal guide, special tool EN46101 or the equivalent.

  1. Install a NEW camshaft cover seal and NEW grommets.
  2.  
  3. Install the camshaft cover using the following procedure:
    1. Install the EN46101 onto the spark plug tubes of the right cylinder head.
    2.  
    3. Install the camshaft cover bolt grommets prior to installing the camshaft cover bolts.

  5. Wipe the camshaft cover sealing surface on the right cylinder head with a clean, lint-free cloth.
  6.  
  7. Place a bead 0.3150 inch (8mm) in diameter by 0.1575 inch (4mm) in height of RTV sealant, GM P/N 12378521 or equivalent, on the engine front cover split lines (1).

  9. Place the right camshaft cover into position onto the right cylinder head.
  10.  
  11. Loosely install the right camshaft cover bolts.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the right camshaft cover bolts in the sequence shown and torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

  15. Remove the EN46101 from the spark plug tubes of the right cylinder head.
  16.  
  17. Install the NEW spark plugs into the right cylinder head and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install each ignition coil through the right camshaft cover into the spark plug tube taking care not to damage the spark plug and/or the seal in the right camshaft cover.
  20.  
  21. Install each ignition coil bolt and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the wiring harness to the front of the camshaft cover.
  24.  
  25. Install the wiring harness conduit retainers to the wiring harness conduit.
  26.  
  27. Install the wiring harness to the side of the camshaft cover.
  28.  
  29. Connect the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  30.  
  31. Install the upper intake manifold with the lower intake manifold.
  32.  
  33. Install the engine cover.
  34.  

4.6L Engine
Left
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fuel injector sight shield.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) fresh air tube from the left camshaft cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the left side ignition module.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolt connecting the ground strap to the left camshaft cover.

  11. Remove the bolt securing the oil level indicator tube to the left cylinder head and reposition the tube away from the camshaft cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the camshaft cover bolts.
  14.  
  15. Lift the camshaft drive end of the camshaft cover up.
  16.  
  17. Remove the camshaft cover.
  18.  
  19. Discard the camshaft cover gasket and spark plug port seals if there is any evidence of damage or if the seal comes out of the groove in the cover during removal.
  20.  
  21. Clean the gasket mating surface on the cylinder head.
  22.  
  23. Clean and inspect the camshaft cover.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Install a new camshaft cover gasket to the camshaft cover if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Place a small amount of sealant at the split line (1, 2) of the left cylinder head and the left camshaft position actuator housing.
    WARNING
    Important: Be careful to prevent the exposed section of the camshaft cover gasket from being damaged by the edge of the cylinder head casting.

  5. Work the camshaft cover into position by pivoting the cover down and aligning the bolt holes.
  6.  
  7. Install the camshaft cover bolts and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the bolt connecting the left camshaft cover ground strap and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Rotate the oil level indicator tube back into its original position and install the bolt securing the tube to the cylinder head and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the ignition module.
  14.  
  15. Connect the PCV fresh air tube to the left camshaft cover.
  16.  
  17. Install the fuel injector sight shield.
  18.  

Right
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fuel injector sight shield.

  5. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) dirty air tube from the camshaft cover.

  7. Remove the ignition module.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the cable harness clips at the front of the camshaft cover and position the cable harness aside.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolt connecting the ground strap to the right camshaft cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the camshaft cover bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the camshaft cover.
  16.  
  17. Discard the camshaft cover gasket and spark plug port seals if there is any evidence of damage or if the seal comes out of the groove in the cover during removal.
  18.  
  19. Clean and inspect the camshaft cover.
  20.  

To install:


WARNING
Important: Be careful to prevent the exposed section of the camshaft cover seal from being damaged by the edge of the cylinder head casting.

  1. Install the camshaft cover gasket as required.
  2.  
  3. Place a small amount of sealant GM P/N 12345739 or equivalent at the split line (1, 2) of the right cylinder head and the right camshaft position actuator housing.

  5. Install the camshaft cover.
  6.  
  7. Install the camshaft cover bolts installing the ground strap to the camshaft cover and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the ignition module.
  10.  
  11. Connect the PCV dirty air tube to the camshaft cover.
  12.  
  13. Install the fuel injector sight shield.
  14.
