Crankshaft Damper (Balancer)

Removal & Installation



3.6L Engine

NOTE
This procedure requires the use of a flywheel holding tool, special tool EN48018 a harmonic balancer puller, special tool J24420-C and a crankshaft button, special tool J38416-2 or the equivalents.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the A/C compressor and power steering pump drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the generator and water pump drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the transmission bell housing inspection hole cover.
  10.  
  11. Install the EN48018 flywheel holding tool as shown.

  13. Remove the front air deflector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  16.  
  17. Install the J38416-2 in the nose of the crankshaft.
  18.  
  19. Install the J24420-C in order to remove the crankshaft balancer.
  20.  
  21. Pull the crankshaft balancer off by tightening the center bolt on the J24420-C until the crankshaft balancer pulls off of the crankshaft end.
  22.  
  23. Remove the J24420-C from the crankshaft balancer.

To install:


NOTE
This procedure requires the use of a flywheel holding tool, special tool EN48018 a harmonic balancer installer, special tool J41998-B and a angle meter, special tool J45059 or the equivalents.

  1. Install the EN48018 flywheel holding tool as shown.

  3. Use the J41998-B, to install the crankshaft balancer.
    NOTE
    Do not lubricate the crankshaft front oil seal or crankshaft balancer sealing surfaces. The crankshaft balancer is installed into a dry seal.

  4.  
  5. Apply lubricant to the inside of the crankshaft balancer hub bore.

  7. Place the crankshaft balancer in position on the crankshaft.
  8.  
  9. Thread the J41998-B in the crankshaft by at least 10 threads.
  10.  
  11. Push the crankshaft balancer into position by tightening the nut on the J41998-B until the large washer bottoms out on the crankshaft end.

  13. Remove the J41998-B .
  14.  
  15. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to 74 ft. lbs (100 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt an additional 150 degrees using the J45059.
  20.  
  21. Install the front air deflector.
  22.  
  23. Remove the EN48018 flywheel holding tool.

  25. Install the transmission bell housing inspection hole cover.
  26.  
  27. Install the generator and water pump drive belt.

  15. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt.

  17. Install the J38416-2 in the nose of the crankshaft.
  18.  
  19. Install the J24420-C in order to remove the crankshaft balancer.
  20.  
  21. Pull the crankshaft balancer off by tightening the center bolt on the J24420-C until the crankshaft balancer pulls off of the crankshaft end.

  23. Remove the J24420-C from the crankshaft balancer.

  1. Install the EN48018 flywheel holding tool as shown.

  3. Use the J41998-B, to install the crankshaft balancer.
    NOTE
    Do not lubricate the crankshaft front oil seal or crankshaft balancer sealing surfaces. The crankshaft balancer is installed into a dry seal.

  5. Apply lubricant to the inside of the crankshaft balancer hub bore.

  7. Place the crankshaft balancer in position on the crankshaft.
  8.  
  9. Thread the J41998-B in the crankshaft by at least 10 threads.
  10.  
  11. Push the crankshaft balancer into position by tightening the nut on the J41998-B until the large washer bottoms out on the crankshaft end.

  13. Remove the J41998-B .
  14.  
  15. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).

  19. Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt an additional 150 degrees using the J45059.
  20.  
  21. Install the front air deflector.

  23. Remove the EN48018 flywheel holding tool.

4.6L Engine
  1. This procedure requires the use of the following special tools or the equivalents:

    Crankshaft balancer remover J24420-C
     
    Crankshaft button J38416-2
     
    Crankshaft balancer installer J41998-B
     
    Angle meter J45059
     
    Flywheel holding tool EN48018
     

  2.  
  3. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the transmission bell housing inspection hole cover.
  10.  
  11. Install the EN48018 flywheel holding tool as shown.

  13. Remove the front air deflector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  16.  
  17. Place the J38416-2 crankshaft button into the end of the crankshaft.
  18.  
  19. Install the J24420-C on the crankshaft balancer.

  21. Remove the crankshaft balancer using the J24420-C .
  22.  
  23. Clean and inspect the crankshaft balancer.

To install:

  1. Position the crankshaft balancer on the nose of the crankshaft.
  2.  
  3. Press the crankshaft balancer in place using the J41998-B.

  5. Clean the crankshaft balancer bolt threads.
  6.  
  7. Apply engine oil to the crankshaft balancer bolt threads.
  8.  
  9. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  10.  
  11. First Pass, tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Final Pass, tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt an additional 120 degrees using the J45059 .
  14.  
  15. Install the front air deflector.
  16.  
  17. Remove the EN48018 flywheel holding tool.
  18.  
  19. Install the transmission bell housing inspection hole cover.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Install the accessory drive belts.
  24.  
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26.  

  1. This procedure requires the use of the following special tools or the equivalents:

    Crankshaft balancer remover J24420-C
     
    Crankshaft button J38416-2
     
    Crankshaft balancer installer J41998-B
     
    Angle meter J45059
     
    Flywheel holding tool EN48018
     

  2.  
  3. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the transmission bell housing inspection hole cover.
  10.  
  11. Install the EN48018 flywheel holding tool as shown.

  13. Remove the front air deflector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  16.  
  17. Place the J38416-2 crankshaft button into the end of the crankshaft.
  18.  
  19. Install the J24420-C on the crankshaft balancer.

  21. Remove the crankshaft balancer using the J24420-C .
  22.  
  23. Clean and inspect the crankshaft balancer.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Position the crankshaft balancer on the nose of the crankshaft.
  2.  
  3. Press the crankshaft balancer in place using the J41998-B.

  5. Clean the crankshaft balancer bolt threads.
  6.  
  7. Apply engine oil to the crankshaft balancer bolt threads.

  9. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  10.  
  11. First Pass, tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Final Pass, tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt an additional 120 degrees using the J45059 .
  14.  
  15. Install the front air deflector.
  16.  
  17. Remove the EN48018 flywheel holding tool.
  18.  
  19. Install the transmission bell housing inspection hole cover.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Install the accessory drive belts.
  24.  
  25. Lower the vehicle.
