Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  6.  
  7. Recover the air conditioning refrigerant, into a refrigerant recovery station
  8.  
  9. Disable the air bag system.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core inlet and outlet tubes in the engine compartment.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect both A/C line fittings at the cowl. Remove the quick connect fittings, then remove and discard the O-rings.
  14.  
  15. Remove the floor console shifter trim panel.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the traction control connector and the console connectors on each side.
  18.  
  19. Remove 6 screws and remove the floor console.
  20.  
  21. Remove the center console A/C vents.
  22.  
  23. Remove the HVAC control panel/ashtray assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove the radio.
  26.  
  27. Remove the glove box door and the glove box.
  28.  
  29. Remove the instrument cluster assembly.
  30.  
  31. Remove the defroster grille.
  32.  
  33. On each side of the instrument panel, remove the screws attaching the finish panels, release the locking tabs, disconnect the connectors and remove the finish panels.
    NOTE
    The front wheels must be in the straight ahead position and the steering column locked before disconnect the intermediate shaft. Failure to do so may result in damage to the SRS coil.

  35. Center the steering wheel.
  36.  
  37. Install Steering Column Anti-rotation pin J-42640 to lock the steering column.
  38.  
  39. Raise and support the vehicle.
  40.  
  41. Remove the upper to lower intermediate steering shaft bolt.
  42.  
  43. Remove the knee bolster.
  44.  
  45. Remove the steering column trim covers.
  46.  
  47. Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors.
  48.  
  49. Support the steering column.
  50.  
  51. Remove the 4 steering column mounting nuts and lower the column.
  52.  
  53. Remove the bolts at the lower instrument panel retainer at the bottom of the center console.
  54.  
  55. Remove the center console attaching screws.
  56.  
  57. Remove the screws behind the glove box opening attaching the instrument panel retainer.
  58.  
  59. Remove the instrument panel fascia retaining screws and the upper retaining screws and remove the instrument panel retainer.

  61. Remove the nuts attaching the brake pedal bracket to the instrument panel carrier.

  63. Remove the parking brake pedal assembly.
  64.  
  65. Disconnect all electrical wire retainers from the instrument panel carrier to free the carrier.
  66.  
  67. Remove the screws attaching the carrier to the cowl.
  68.  
  69. Remove the instrument panel carrier.
  70.  
  71. Remove the air inlet assembly.
  72.  
  73. Disconnect the HVAC module connector.
  74.  
  75. Press the tabs and release the left and right rear heater ducts from the HVAC module.
  76.  
  77. Remove the drain tube.
  78.  
  79. Remove the upper and lower HVAC mounting screws and remove the HVAC module.
  80.  
  81. Remove the heater core pipe bracket screw and bracket.
  82.  
  83. Remove the heater core.

To install:

  1. Install the heater core to the HVAC module.
  2.  
  3. Install the heater core pipe bracket and screw.
  4.  
  5. Install the HAVC module. Tighten the mounting nuts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect left and right rear heater ducts to the HVAC module
  8.  
  9. Install the drain tube.
  10.  
  11. Connect the HVAC module connector.
  12.  
  13. Install the air inlet assembly.
  14.  
  15. Install new O-rings to the A/C suction and liquid lines and connect them to the HVAC module.
  16.  
  17. Connect the heater hoses.
  18.  
  19. Install the instrument panel carrier and tighten the bolts and nuts.
  20.  
  21. Connect the electrical connections to the carrier.
  22.  
  23. Connect the brake pedal bracket to the cowl.
  24.  
  25. Install the parking brake pedal assembly.
  26.  
  27. Install the HVAC ducts.
  28.  
  29. Install the instrument panel fascia and the upper retaining screws and tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Install the screws behind the glove box opening attaching the instrument panel retainer.
  32.  
  33. Install the center console attaching screws.
  34.  
  35. Install the bolts at the lower instrument panel retainer and tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  36.  
  37. Install the upper intermediate steering shaft-to-steering column bolt and tighten the bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
  38.  
  39. Raise the steering column and install the 4 steering column mounting nuts. Tighten the nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  40.  
  41. Install the upper intermediate steering shaft-to-lower intermediate shaft bolt and tighten the bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).

  43. Install the knee bolster.
  44.  
  45. Install the steering column trim covers.
  46.  
  47. Connect the steering column electrical connectors.
  48.  
  49. Remove the Steering Column Anti-rotation pin.
  50.  
  51. Install the instrument panel side finish panels.
  52.  
  53. Install the defroster grille.
  54.  
  55. Install the instrument cluster assembly.
  56.  
  57. Install the glove box door and the glove box.
  58.  
  59. Install the radio.
  60.  
  61. Install the HVAC control panel/ashtray assembly.
  62.  
  63. Install the center console A/C vents.
  64.  
  65. Install the floor console.
  66.  
  67. Connect the traction control connector and the console connectors on each side.
  68.  
  69. Install the floor console shifter trim panel.
  70.  
  71. Recharge the air conditioning refrigerant.
  72.  
  73. Fill the cooling system.
  74.  
  75. Connect the negative battery cable.
  76.  
  77. Start the vehicle and check for leaks.

  25. Remove the upper and lower HVAC mounting screws and remove the HVAC module.

  27. Remove the heater core pipe bracket screw and bracket.
  28.  
  29. Remove the heater core.

To install:

  1. Install the heater core to the HVAC module.
  2.  
  3. Install the heater core pipe bracket and screw.
  4.  
  5. Install the HAVC module. Tighten the mounting nuts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect left and right rear heater ducts to the HVAC module
  8.  
  9. Install the drain tube.
  10.  
  11. Connect the HVAC module connector.
  12.  
  13. Install the air inlet assembly.
  14.  
  15. Install new O-rings to the A/C suction and liquid lines and connect them to the HVAC module.
  16.  
  17. Connect the heater hoses.
  18.  
  19. Install the instrument panel.
  20.  
  21. Recharge the air conditioning refrigerant.
  22.  
  23. Fill the cooling system.
  24.  
  25. Connect the negative battery cable.
  26.  
  27. Start the vehicle and check for leaks.
