Ball Joints & Knuckle

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper and wire it out of the way.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Brake rotor
     
    ABS sensor connector
     
    Axle hub nut
     
    Parking brake cable bracket
     
    Parking brake cable from the brake lever
     
    Upper ball joint nut
     

  10.  
  11. Separate the upper arm from the knuckle. Do not use a pickle fork or pry bar to separate the arm.
  12.  
  13. Support the lower control arm with a jack.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower shock mounting bolt
     
    Trailing arm-to-knuckle bolt and nut
     
    Lower control arm-to-knuckle bolt
     
    Adjustment link-to-knuckle nut
     

  16.  
  17. Install tool J-45859 onto the wheel hub and secure with 2 lug nuts.
  18.  
  19. Use the tool to disengage the halfshaft from the wheel hub and bearing. Support the halfshaft.
  20.  
  21. Remove the knuckle.
  22.  
  23. Separate the wheel hub/bearing from the knuckle and backing plate.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Install the wheel hub/bearing to the knuckle and backing plate.
  2.  
  3. Install the wheel hub/bearing and tighten the bolts to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Install the adjustment link to the knuckle and tighten the bolt to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the trailing arm-to-knuckle bolt and nut and tighten to 125 ft. lbs. (170 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the lower shock mounting bolt and tighten to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the lower control arm-to-knuckle bolt.
  14.  
  15. Connect the upper ball joint to the knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Install the upper ball joint mounting nut.
  18.  
  19. Install the parking brake bracket.
  20.  
  21. Remove the jack.
  22.  
  23. Connect the ABS sensor connector.
  24.  
  25. Install a new axle hub nut and tighten to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install the brake rotor.
  28.  
  29. Install the brake caliper.
  30.  
  31. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  32.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  5. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper and wire it out of the way.

  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    ABS sensor connector
     
    Axle hub nut
     
    Parking brake cable bracket
     
    Parking brake cable from the brake lever
     
    Upper ball joint nut

  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Trailing arm-to-knuckle bolt and nut
     
    Lower control arm-to-knuckle bolt
     
    Adjustment link-to-knuckle nut

  17. Install tool J-45859 onto the wheel hub and secure with 2 lug nuts.
  18.  
  19. Use the tool to disengage the halfshaft from the wheel hub and bearing. Support the halfshaft.
  20.  
  21. Remove the knuckle.
  22.  
  23. Separate the wheel hub/bearing from the knuckle and backing plate.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Install the wheel hub/bearing to the knuckle and backing plate.
  2.  
  3. Install the wheel hub/bearing and tighten the bolts to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Install the adjustment link to the knuckle and tighten the bolt to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the trailing arm-to-knuckle bolt and nut and tighten to 125 ft. lbs. (170 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the lower shock mounting bolt and tighten to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the lower control arm-to-knuckle bolt.
  14.  
  15. Connect the upper ball joint to the knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Install the upper ball joint mounting nut.
  18.  
  19. Install the parking brake bracket.
  20.  
  21. Remove the jack.
  22.  
  23. Connect the ABS sensor connector.
  24.  
  25. Install a new axle hub nut and tighten to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install the brake rotor.
  28.  
  29. Install the brake caliper.
  30.  
  31. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  32.
