Transfer Case Removal & Installation

4.6L AWD Models



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transfer case fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Exhaust system
     
    Rear propeller shaft
     

  6.  
  7. Support the transmission with a jack
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear transmission mount-to-body bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the transmission mount-to-transmission bolts.
  12.  
  13. Insert a flat bladed tool into the notch on the transfer case flange and carefully move the front propeller shaft forward and remove the transfer case flange.
  14.  
  15. Wire the propeller shaft up and out of the way.
  16.  
  17. Support the transfer case with a jack and remove the mounting bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the transfer case.

To install:

  1. Install the transfer case and tighten the bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Remove the jack.
  4.  
  5. Untie the front propeller shaft and position it to the transfer case so the coned end CV joint is installed into the transfer case flange.
  6.  
  7. Clean the transfer case flange bolts and apply threadlock to the threads and allow it to dry for 10 minutes.
  8.  
  9. Install the transfer case flange bolts with the crescent washers and tighten the bolts in sequence to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).

  11. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission mount-to-transmission bolts. Tighten to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
     
    Rear transmission mount-to-body bolts. Tighten the bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).

  13. Remove the jack.
  14.  
  15. Install or connect the following:

    Rear propeller shaft
     
    Exhaust system
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  16.  
  17. Fill the transfer case with fluid to the correct level.
  18.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Drain the transfer case fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Exhaust system
     
    Rear propeller shaft
     

  6.  
  7. Support the transmission with a jack
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear transmission mount-to-body bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the transmission mount-to-transmission bolts.
  12.  
  13. Insert a flat bladed tool into the notch on the transfer case flange and carefully move the front propeller shaft forward and remove the transfer case flange.
  14.  
  15. Wire the propeller shaft up and out of the way.
  16.  
  17. Support the transfer case with a jack and remove the mounting bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the transfer case.

To install:

  1. Install the transfer case and tighten the bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).

  13. Remove the jack.
  14.  
  15. Install or connect the following:

    Rear propeller shaft
     
    Exhaust system
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  16.  
  17. Fill the transfer case with fluid to the correct level.
  18.
