Cylinder Head

Removal & Installation



3.6L Engine
Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Left side secondary timing chain
     
    Oil level indicator
     
    Coolant temperature sensor heat shield
     
    Coolant temperature sensor electrical connector
     
    Wiring harness ground, connector and connector bracket
     
    Power steering pump pulley
     
    Power steering pump, but leave the fluid lines attached
     
    Surge tank hose
     
    Exhaust manifold heat shield
     
    Catalytic converter
     
    Oil filter adapter upper bolt
     
    Two front cylinder head M8 bolts
     
    Cylinder head bolts
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the cylinder head with the exhaust manifold attached.
  10.  
  11. Discard the head gasket.
  12.  

To install:

  1. The cylinder head should be cleaned and inspected prior to installation.
  2.  
  3. Lightly oil all bolt threads and stud bolt threads before installation.
  4.  
  5. Clean all gasket mating surfaces thoroughly.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:
    WARNING
    Always use new cylinder head bolts when installing the cylinder head or damage to the engine may occur.



    Exhaust manifold, if removed.
     
    New head gasket on the cylinder block.
     



    Cylinder head on the cylinder block.
     
    Tighten the M11 cylinder head bolts in steps following the proper torque sequence. The first step is 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm), the second step is an additional 120°.
     
    Tighten the front M8 cylinder head bolts in steps following the proper torque sequence. The first step is 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm), the second step is an additional 60°.

    Oil filter adapter upper bolt
     
    Catalytic converter
     
    Exhaust manifold heat shield
     
    Surge tank hose
     
    Power steering pump, but leave the fluid lines attached
     
    Power steering pump pulley
     
    Wiring harness ground, connector and connector bracket
     
    Coolant temperature sensor electrical connector
     
    Coolant temperature sensor heat shield
     
    Oil level indicator
     
    Left side secondary timing chain
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
    NOTE
    Engine coolant is corrosive to engine bearing material. Replace the engine oil after removal of any coolant-carrying component to help prevent potential bearing damage.

  11. Change the engine oil and filter
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  16.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Right side secondary timing chain
     
    Coolant inlet pipe
     
    Wiring harness ground and harness bracket
     
    Negative battery cable bolt on head
     
    Exhaust manifold heat shield
     
    Catalytic converter
     
    Cylinder head bolts
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the cylinder head with the exhaust manifold attached.
  10.  
  11. Discard the head gasket.

To install:

  1. The cylinder head should be cleaned and inspected prior to installation.

    Cylinder head on the cylinder block.
     
    Tighten the M11 cylinder head bolts in steps following the proper torque sequence. The first step is 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm), the second step is an additional 120°.
     
    Catalytic converter
     
    Exhaust manifold heat shield
     
    Negative battery cable bolt on head
     
    Wiring harness ground and harness bracket. Tighten bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Coolant inlet pipe
     
    Right side secondary timing chain
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  12.  

4.6L Engine
Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Exhaust manifold
     
    Throttle body
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor
     
    EVAP canister purge valve hose
     
    Thermostat housing hoses
     
    Thermostat housing
     
    Left side secondary timing chain
     
    Left camshafts
     
    Power steering reservoir return hose bracket
     
    Cylinder head bolts

  9. Remove the cylinder head and discard the head gasket.

To install:

  1. The cylinder head should be cleaned and inspected prior to installation.
  2.  
  3. Lightly oil all bolt threads and stud bolt threads before installation.
  4.  
  5. Clean all gasket mating surfaces thoroughly.
    NOTE
    Ensure the M11 cylinder head bolts have the proper pitch or engine damage will occur. The bolts have been revised. Identify the bolts before installation. Bolts with a pitch of 1.5mm have a thread length of about 1.89 inches (48mm). Bolts with a pitch of 2mm have a thread length of about 2.64 inches (67mm).

  7. Install or connect the following:
    WARNING
    Always use new cylinder head bolts when installing the cylinder head or damage to the engine may occur.



    New head gasket on the cylinder block.
     



    Cylinder head on the cylinder block.
     
    Tighten the M11 cylinder head bolts in steps following the proper torque sequence. The first step is 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm), the second step is an additional 60°, the third step is an additional 60 ° and the fourth step is a final 60°.
     
    Tighten the M6 bolts at the front of the head to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    Power steering reservoir return hose bracket
     
    Left camshafts
     
    Left side secondary timing chain
     
    Thermostat housing and tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Thermostat housing hoses
     
    EVAP canister purge valve hose
     
    MAP sensor
     
    Throttle body
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Exhaust manifold
     
    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  12.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Coolant
     
    Exhaust manifold
     
    Throttle body
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor
     
    EVAP canister purge valve hose
     
    Thermostat housing hoses
     
    Thermostat housing
     
    Right side secondary timing chain
     
    Right camshafts
     
    Cylinder head bolts
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the cylinder head and discard the head gasket.

To install:

    Thermostat housing and tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

    EVAP canister purge valve hose
     
    MAP sensor
     
    Throttle body
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Exhaust manifold
     
    Coolant
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  10.  
  11. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks.
